Hearing on Contravect Canal Route Debate Emerges
Fort Wayne leaders push for a northern route canal as waters from St. Joseph and other rivers could feed a south route. Perry Randall cites water transportation growth and avoiding business paralysis as key benefits. The group met Washington officials including Speaker Cannon and Congressman Sereno Payne, but no resolution this session due to minority leader Williams's tactics. Randall heads to Fort Wayne, Hash to Philadelphia, and Taylor notes 110 miles of south route needing no snakes for commerce.

New Jersey Delegation Vote Foils Bryan Support
In Trenton on April 28, delegates to the Denver convention rejected a Bryan instructing resolution. James Smith, an ally, controlled the convention and defeated Hubert Davis of Hudson County and James Martine of Union. Martine’s bid failed. Davis’s supporters grew bitter over the outcome.
