Reports from Gunshu Pass describe a quiet scene as a heavy Japanese cavalry curtain hides strength from Russian lines. Chinese fugitives offer conflicting accounts of a northern Japanese advance and a potential turning move toward Kirin to aid Vladivostok. Rail construction from Sinmintin to Mukden is said to have begun. Snow has fallen, roads are muddy and in poor condition.
Toklo dispatch reports from Japanese headquarters describe enemy movements near Tie Pass and surrounding areas. From St Petersburg April 1 to 25 p m peace rumors circulate that Russia will cede the southern Saghalien island group to Japan and acknowledge Manchuria and Korea as outside its sphere. The Chinese Eastern railway may pass to Japan or an international syndicate with the loans sold at a premium as markets rise.
Harbin on April 1 reports widespread business paralysis and loss of confidence as a majority of the population departs. Authorities suspect a bold Japanese turning move toward the east and note Russian cavalry activity to prevent a Mukden reprise.
A St Petersburg dispatch reports a new loan of 100 million dollars to Russia. The issuance is dated April 1 and cited by a news agency in Jordon.

Chicago April 1 Judge Tuthill fined Frank Tennant an alleged associate of John and Patsy King in a policy outfit five thousand dollars. The judgment surprised the defendant as bondsman were not present and Tennant was taken into custody. Attorney Morris sought arrest of judgment, but Judge Barnes refused to intervene though a motion was allowed to be filed for later consideration by Judge Tuthill.
In Lafayette Indiana on April 1 Charles Merica of Delphi reeled in a heavy snag and pulled ashore the body later identified as Barner Hopkins a Delphi youth who vanished after leaping from the Pittsburg railroad bridge in Carroll county on March 1.
Newton K Gall a traveling salesman for a Grand Rapids firm was arrested in Peru Indiana at the Bearss hotel on a charge of abducting Eloise Benner sixteen of Logansport. Gall slept in his room when summoned by Marshal Henn the warrant supported by the girl’s parents affidavit. The girl’s father James Benner threatened Gall while police kept peace. Gall claimed she volunteered she had been driven from home and the girl’s parents alleged hypnosis. Gall was moved to Logansport for trial.
In Logansport Indiana April 1 N K Gall a traveling salesman is jailed on a kidnapping charge regarding Miss Benner of Logansport. He was writing a letter to her at arrest. She disappeared a week ago after visits to Kokomo Danville and other points. He seeks habeas corpus release unless she is found. Their acquaintance began when she clerked in a local store.
A new temple of Christianity rises as St Pauls Lutheran Church rereams in an elaborate re dedication ceremony. The parent church of Lutheranism in the western country hosts Te Deum pieces, organ preludes, choruses, and prayers led by Rev Ay Lange of Concordia Church with the congregation offering offertory and doxology during morning rites at 2 30.
Monday evening service for school children with organ preludes and hymns led by Rev. F Tresselt of Detroit. Congregation participates in scripture reading and collection. Poor legible OCR details indicate a children immersion program and choir verses.
A Wednesday 7 45 pm special service features the St Paul Church congregation choir a Cleveland based Rev John Wefel leading scripture reading and prayers with performances of Te Deum and Kyrie by Prof J H Unge mach and the St Paul School organist position.

Chicago voters head to the polls Tuesday as Judge Edward F Dunne, Democrat, and John Maynard Harlan, Republican, battle for mayor. Dunne pushes municipal ownership of streetcar lines, while Harlan forecasts a Republican victory amid Socialist and Prohibitionist presence. Dunne cites a 59,000 to 75,000 plurality expectation. Harlan bets on a 20,000 margin.
Detroit April 1 with little public interest in the campaign except for local contests. The Republican state ticket is expected to win and Justice Moora is likely to be reelected to the supreme bench. Also to be chosen are two regents of the state university and two members of the state board of education.
Anderson Ind April 1 Governor Hanly replies to Sherman Makepeace urging police enforcement. He says the administration will enforce law in Anderson and elsewhere by example precept or mandate and will act to secure enforcement even if it requires personnel changes on the police board. Daniel Gachler of the police board has postponed his resignation.
New York April 1 refined sugar prices increased 10 cents per hundred pounds across all grades, making granulated sugar cost 15 cents per pound.
Minnie Newton and her brother Harry, aged children of farmer A. T. Newton, were smothered when a wagonload of hay overturned near Huntington West Virginia. The father, unloading the hay, could not save them as the wagon pitched and the hay buried the children before rescue arrived.
President Roosevelt plans a Western tour starting April 2 leaving Washington for San Antonio Texas. He will visit rough rider hosts in Dallas Waco Austin and Fort Worth then hunt in the Texas panhandle and Colorado for three to four weeks with a party including Attorney General Moody and White House staff.
Mrs Roosevelt with her daughter Ethel and sons Kermit and Archie, joined by Mr Joseph Wilmer, arrived in Jacksonville on the Florida Special.
