A tragic accident aboard the Shopmen excursion results in the instant deaths of Sam Henderson and George Miller. Authorities report a sudden calamity causing fatalities and inquiries are underway to determine the cause. Investigators and witnesses are cooperating as the community mourns the victims.
An annual excursion for Pittsburg shop workers to Rome City ended in tragedy when a drawbar failed, causing the train to part and throw two men, Samuel C. Henderson foreman of the copper shop and George G. Miller tinsmith, under the wheels. Both died instantly. Henderson, a longtime Pennsylvanian employee and church member, left a wife and stepson. Miller’s wife and children were aboard. Remains were sent to Kendallville for the funerals with local mourners affected by the loss.

Lafayette Indiana June 20 dedication ceremonies for the state soldiers home open July 4. The 150 acre site overlooks the Wabash valley between Tippecanoe battlefield and Lafayette, with $75,000 invested in buildings. Twelve counties have contributed funds for elderly veterans cottages, with ten more counties offering similar support. Governors, generals, and G A R leaders are among expected attendees. Parades and fireworks will highlight the program.
Five young men graduated with high honors from the oldest school of learning in the city. Alfred Baker Arthur Haffner John Lanternier Charles Remmert and John Welch were honored at a closing exercise in Library hall. The program featured a brilliant musical display and the drama Pizarro performed by senior boys. Lanternier delivered the salutatory with clear resonance. The Cathedral school is a noted state institution and the brothers received praise for their work.

The board of school trustees appointed Miss Margaret Colerick as assistant to the city librarian. Colerick had served in the library for several months, and the choice was praised as a good one. The heating and ventilating contract for Lakeside School was awarded to Peck William, of Cincinnati.
