The minister acknowledges receiving a letter from Cleveland as tensions rise. Don’s senseless rage is expected to block any reasonable dialogue for days, delaying talks and escalating friction between parties.
A Willington Willington colliery blast killed eight workers with estimates reaching eighteen. A separate report notes Ex Mayor W W Gilreath found dead in his Greenville office with a pistol beside him signaling suicide. Delegates to a Hotelmen's convention reached Los Angeles after a six hour snowstorm delay from Arizona. John Kumpp of Lacrosse Wisconsin a banker is mentioned in San Dic o.
Captain Kumpp is being transported by Sheriff Gunderson of Lacrosse after a morning start eastward with the prisoner. Kumpp's family is present at the scene.
A Dudley pneumatic gun test at Hast Island, before General Miles and the board, fired five 33 pound projectiles with 13 pounds of gelatine explosive to ranges up to 1¼ miles. In a later dummy trial the weapon exploded on the third shot. officers escaped unharmed. Another test will be held.
Granapolis April 14. State Republican candidates gather for state committee meeting amid rumors of a Democrat populist coalition. Democrats deny the story while populists hope for a campaign arrangement. The state convention is postponed until after Democratic and Democratic National conventions. Nickel Plate rates advertised for Easter travel with student specials.
George Chandler, claiming Geneva roots, caused chaos at Fanny Joy residence on the flats. Deputies hauled him to jail after windows smashed and chairs hurled. He was fined 25.50 for trespass 10.50 for intoxication and 13.25 for assault. He remains imprisoned awaiting further action.
It seems Bradley will face little trouble in the Tenth district, a Republican stronghold where four delegates-at-large are conceded to Bradley but shift to McKinley after his name is dropped. Bradley supporters likely secure about 12 of 22 delegates to the St. Louis convention with six conventions held tomorrow. The ad segment notes hats and sailor dress shapes offered at 9 cents this week.
Lavorte Ind April 14. Dr J A Zahm noted scientist and procurator general of the Congregation of the Holy Cross is in Washington and will stay until Wednesday to oversee his community's interests. Several Holy Cross novices attend the Catholic university in Washington.
Lexington April 14 reports from 14 county conventions show a tight contest between McKinley and Bradley forces for the Louisville state convention. McKinley leads by about 10 delegates, bracing to widen as uninstructed counties hold balance of power. Delegates in Carlisle and Maysville show split loyalties. Madisonville district sees heated contest over Davies county.
A contractor risking life to rescue his employee unearths danger as Henry Unpacker nearly dies underground. At 7 20 this morning he was buried alive for two minutes before being rescued and is prepared to testify about the perilous episode.
In Freehold New Jersey Clara M Heppenstall reportedly sat up in her coffin during a wake frightening her friends. She then fell back and revived a doctor confirmed a suspended animation case, prompting urgent medical checks.
A Notre Dame official will sail to England Wednesday to meet Dr Zahm and visit Gladstone and Mivart before proceeding to France. The main community is in Rome and the duties demand constant presence there, with continued scientific work as before. The change follows a sudden death in the community and the former procurator general departs for Canada.
In Parn Adelphia April 14 report, rumors say part or all of the crew of the old Philadelphia tug Mascot may have been shot in Morro Castle, Havana. The Mascot sailed from Baltimore for Port of Spain on November 28, carrying about 40 men, far more than a river tow boat. Wreckage washed ashore near Caicas, Bahama islands, prompting a state department inquiry through Havana consul about any imprisoned crew.

Contractor William Oetting and workers dug a 10 foot trench on Fulton street near Brackenridge when sand gave way burying Hunpacker to the waist. Oetting jumped in to help but was buried too. Both were rescued. Hunpacker revived and treated at home while efforts continue to clear debris. Fresh fish and oysters advertised at Jackson's, 140 Calhoun street.
In Momence Illinois on April 14 a large male search party combed the rural area near the town log house for the missing Minnie Williams. The operation yielded no findings and was called off without clue or evidence.

Telegram from Oaxaca City reports rebel Indians in Juquela killed town officials, teachers, a priest, the police chief, and the telegraph operator. Troops are en route as authorities describe a drunken, maddened mob burning the town hall and stamp office, with civilians and officials harmed.
Newport Ky April 14 Attorneys for Jackson and Walling filed a motion asking Coroner Tingley to summon jurors for both Walling and Jackson. They claim Sheriff Plummer has been active in securing evidence for the prosecution, and request the jury be summoned by another. Judge Helm will rule likely Monday afternoon. The move could mark a Kentucky first if the sheriff’s power is removed. Affidavits say Sheriff Plummer showed unusual interest in conviction, denounced defendants, and acted as a special detective for prosecutors and Cincinnati detectives.
NHPEMING Mich April 14 Tomor row morning officials of the miners union representing every iron mining camp on Lake Superior will meet at Andrews hall to vote on demanding shorter hours. Delegates are close mouthed but it is believed the resolution may be adopted. Mineowners would refuse and a strike affecting all mines would probably follow. Twenty thousand to 25 000 men are employed in and about the mines.
The text notes the defendants are pursued with the aim of convicting them, claiming the author has spent hundreds of dollars to secure convictions. The affidavit is sworn by Jackson only, while Walling refuses to swear that Sheriff Plummer ever threatened him. The affidavit was made before the circuit court clerk.
The Fort Wayne lodge of Elks held its second annual benefit at the Temple to a crowded audience. Although not matching their advertisement, the amateur minstrel show impressed with local talent, making the event particularly pleasing and proving the Elks can fill the Temple whenever they choose.

A meeting will be held at the South Wayne town hall Thursday evening to organize a new church.
