Garibaldi advocates peaceful handling of the Alabama Claims and criticizes Thiers, supports Paris seat return. Carlist forces siege Purgecoeroda in Gerrona province, Spain.
City Treasurer Mercer and broker Chas F Yerkes, imprisoned last winter for embezzling Philadelphia funds, were pardoned by the Governor. A condition voids the pardon if any payment occurred for the process. Yerkes denies Hartranft's charges and the pardon's authenticity is debated, causing excitement.
The President named James Wright James B. Graham and J. A. Powell as commissioners to examine and report on a Burlington and Missouri Railroad Company road segment in Nebraska. In Washington Territory a Northern Pacific Railway engineer reported mysterious mounds along the Pacific between Monticello and Olympia containing pottery and other relics.
In Olney Illinois Rev Dr Austins residence was burned along with all furnishings. A library worth about 2000 dollars and several thousand dollars in promissory notes and papers were destroyed. The Chickasaw Legislature passed a bill asking Congress to allot lands and inviting the Choctaws to join, seen as a move toward opening Indian Territory to white settlement this winter.
Illinois dispatch reports at a house of ill fame on a Mississippi River island between Clinton Iowa and Fulton Illinois a brutal murder by Joe O Neil who stabbed Herman Rexford with a dirk and finally beheaded him with an axe O Neil was arrested in Fulton and jailed.
The Rivulet woolen mills in North Uxbridge burned this morning with damage estimated at $25,000. Fire crews fought the blaze as the cause was investigated.
The Dalhouse, bound from Montreal to Chicago, burned Thursday in Lake Ontario near Osweco New York. The crew were rescued by the propeller City of Concord. The Dalhouse was owned by the Wellan Railroad Company.
