Boilers Explode at Vulcan Steel Works Killing Four
In St Louis a boiler in the Vulcan bloom mill exploded at eleven am. One hundred workers were present. The condemned man cried out in distress and prayed aloud as priests urged trust in Jesus. The trap dropped at 10:15 and he was cut down at 10:44 with no struggle. He was hanged for the murder of Henry Murray Williams in Ludlow Kentucky on December 15 1880. There were no living witnesses to the crime and Father Lambert's words on the scaffold were his only confession.
