Busby was badly hurt with a shot to head and arm. Robinson resisted arrest but was captured by Greenwood officials as mobs warned of possible vengeance.

An eye witness details a freight train of about twenty five cars carrying oil tanks. On a wooden bridge over Wappinger creek the tenth car axle breaks, wrecking the car and triggering a collision with the express passenger train traveling at thirty miles per hour.
