A blazing kerosene lamp under the main stairway started a fire in the Beckwith House in Oshkosh Wisconsin. The luxury hotel burned to ruins within two hours as guests and staff escaped by rope and ladder. Mrs C E Harlow survived a fall aided by ropes. Mrs Simon B Page died. Insurance stood at 19 000 with property loss around 50 000.

New York December 4 The board of managers of the produce exchange adopted the committee on stade recommendations asking the treasury to require customs collectors to clear only natural dairy butter and to classify all resembling products as imitation butter. Margarine oil should be cleared as oleomargarine and state laws amended to reflect this classification.
