Illicit liquor raid across Best and Big Lake ends with arrests
Sheriff Barker and District Attorney Montague led a cross county raid on Best and Big Lake last Saturday night. Sixteen people were arrested, 2251 quarts of illicit beverage seized, a still and brewery destroyed. Officers from Pecos Upton Irion and Dallas areas participated along with federal agents.

Rainfall boosts Fort Stockton ranchers and locals return home
Rainfall from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday noon measured one and one quarter inches at Fort Stockton. Most rain was slow with little wind causing minor cotton discoloration and hay crop damage. Stock raisers welcome the downpour and hope for more as Alvin and Mrs Rooney return to town and reside in the Dickinson building apartments.

Republic Oil Co Buys Upton Co Oil Well
Republic Oil Company purchases 733 acres in five tracts and three fourths interest in a new producer in Upton County for 500000. The sale, handled by J P Johnston and George M B McCamey, excludes Marland Oil Company’s one fourth stake. The newly acquired leases surround the well, located 2 to 2.5 miles away, which flowed 134 barrels in 24 hours at 2185 feet and then produced six to seven barrels per hour before storage.

Rains Slow Cotton Picking and Gin Stations Slow
Rains totaling over an inch Wednesday and Thursday hinder cotton gathering. The local gin, running constantly, closed after processing 443 bales due to rain affecting deliveries. Prices earlier in the week ranged 24 to 24.50, but a government report showing 14,759,000 bales produced and 7,101,710 ginned by Oct 1 pushed prices down 124 points. Joe Montgomery works on four miles of cross fences for his ranch.
