Eugene Grove, 55, a Red Bluff Tax Official and prominent Pecos Valley resident, died Friday in Pecos after a heart attack. Born January 12, 1895, in Indian Territory, he helped develop Imperial and Buena Vista farming communities, married Marian Heagy in 1917, and was buried at Easthill Cemetery Fort Stockton after funeral services in Imperial.
Two high ranking West Texas Jaycees officials Ed Costello and Percy Tate will install the Fort Stockton Jaycees officers at noon in the Museum Library Building. President elect Dr. Ben McReynolds and others will be seated as directors. Judge Paul Moss will speak at 12 30 about government procedure. public invited.
Pecos County 4-H Club youths depart Monday for a two week educational tour guided by County Agent W T Posey. Stops include El Paso Tucson Phoenix San Diego Los Angeles San Francisco and California's San Joaquin Valley with a Grand Canyon return. Joe Hayter Sr camp cook and adult leaders Cy Phillips and Stewart Deibitsch assist. Reverend Casey Cantrell addressed 24 boys before departure.
Fort Stockton shows a strong midyear surge in building permits with several large projects. The Falks secure a $20,000 new home at Colpitts Boulevard and Sixth Street, a 40 by 60 foot Austin stone house to be built by W. C. Rutherford of San Angelo. Ward Water gains a $16,000 permit for a tile and concrete business building on the Highway to be leased by Black's Drug Store. Black plans summer relocation and a larger facility with a fountain. Other permits include a $5,000 house for Kermit Dyche and smaller permits for R. A. Gonzales and Mrs. Candida Ramirez in Orient and St Gall areas.
Three Fort Stockton students joined a Sul Ross College clinic in Alpine last week. Allen Willard learned advanced saxophone techniques and drum major procedures while Barbara Fortson and Ruth Olson studied in the majorette section. They returned home last Thursday. Dr. and Mrs. M. E. Barrett returned to Decatur Alabama on Tuesday afternoon.
A general holiday will be observed in Fort Stockton on July 4 with most business houses closing. Cafes service stations and drug stores may stay open. Efforts to extend the holiday to Monday failed as many merchants chose to remain open. The Fort Stockton Credit Bureau made a plea on Wednesday. Many residents plan to visit Pecos for the annual Fourth of July rodeo since no formal celebration is planned locally.
Ellyson and Robertson win approval for a 30 by 87 foot masonry building on Main and Division Streets in Fort Stockton to house a new Post Office. The project includes space for head-in parking and new fixtures by the Post Office Department, with construction to proceed once final specifications are drawn and leases updated.
Death of Dr Alfred Eugene Barrett 80 Fort Stockton longtime county health officer. Funeral Saturday 5 PM First Baptist Church with Rev George Bastian. Born December 25 1869 New Middleton Tennessee he practiced in Allen and Pampa before moving to Fort Stockton in 1918. Survived by widow Bettie, children Maurice J Reeves Greenwade Beatrice and others. services included quartet and pallbearers.
Dr. Carl J. Uthoff, recently resigning as section chief in urology at Veterans Hospital Fargo, joins Dr. J. F. Gipson and practices in Gipson Hospital. Illinois medical graduate 1924 with international postgrad study and fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Also listed in Who's Who in Medicine and related directories. Married with four children.
O H Ake of Junction leased the Hillger building at Fifth and Main previously occupied by Frank's Food Store and plans to open the White Auto Store around July 22. Ake, a former farmer and implement dealer, will move to Fort Stockton to run the business with wife and daughter joining in school. They are in Wichita Falls this week for a White Auto Store operator training and are buying fixtures and merchandise. The store will carry home and auto supplies, hardware, and appliances with prices aligned to company stores in San Angelo and El Paso.
Lions Club honored guest Roy Carter of Kermit spoke on Fort Stockton activities at a night of humor and officers installation. Dr Noble Armstrong of Sul Ross staged double talk and phonetic humor with Victor Chopin from Norway delivering a lecture on English pronunciation amid audience amusement.
Roman Gonzales aged 26 died Monday in an El Paso hospital after three months illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday with Rev. Fr. Alfredo Ramirez officiating and graveside rites at Catholic Cemetery. Survived by mother Concha Gonzales sister Maudicia Carrio brother Manuel wife and two children. Born in Shafter he lived most of his life in Fort Stockton and worked as a city employee. Mr and Mrs Delton Yarbrough relocated to Quannah for their new home.
More than 75 out of town golfers anticipated for Fort Stockton Country Club’s first Invitational. Qualifying begins 6 30 a m with about 30 locals. 13 year old Forrest Daniel and 15 year old Dickie Powell enter. Low scorer wins a gold watch. Calcutta pool and entertainment planned.
