Voters in Pecos County face the longest Democratic primary ballot with 42 candidates for precinct county and district offices and a historically large state slate. The Pecos County Democratic Executive Committee set ballot assessments and named precinct presiding officers for the July 23 election.
Three national and state Woodman Circle officials will attend a Fort Stockton meeting at the Community House on Saturday. The session opens at 7 with a memorial service for Miss Hazel Tharpe, who died June 3, to be led by Mrs. Etta Davidson at 8 30. Other leaders include Mrs. Tressie Goldsticker and Mrs. Jamie B. Garner, with Mrs. Fred Cliett serving as secretary.
Contracts to pave and top the Old Spanish Trail from the Reeves County line to east of Fort Stockton will be let by the Texas State Highway Department in Austin on June 30. Two additional topping contracts on Highway 27 cover 24.6 miles from the Pecos Reeves line to near Fort Stockton and 12.8 miles from Fort Stockton to the junction of Highways 7 and 99. Completion will connect paving from seven miles west of Balmorhea to the new McCamey road, with July plans for further work toward the Pecos River. Local officials expect topping or paving on the McCamey highway to begin late July. Existing contracts complete a 25 mile gap between Fort Stockton and Sheffield, bringing Pecos County closer to full paving across the Old Spanish Trail.
The Woodmen Circle paid a policy of Miss Hazel Tharpe to Mrs. W B Tharpe within a week of death proof. Omaha office officials presented a $1000 check to the beneficiary, with praise for prompt claims settlement boosting local support for the organization.
Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Lannom, 63, mother of C. W. Lannom of Fort Stockton, died at her Denison home June 14 after six months of illness. A Rutherford County Tennessee native born July 26, 1863, she moved to Denison in 1917 from Pecos and was a respected Baptist church member. She leaves husband I. L. Lannom. three sons C. W. Lannom, W. L. Lannom, and Clarence Lannom. daughter Miss Mamie Lannom. sister Mrs. M. M. Bond. and other relatives. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery after funeral at Shot-Murray's chapel with Dr. J. S. Hodges officiating.

Rev Cecil Lang formerly served as pastor here returns to lead a revival at the Presbyterian church. Services are held twice daily at 10 a m and 8 30 p m with an opening service Thursday. Pastor C L Allfather urges all to attend as Lang’s preaching aims to build Christian life and convert nonbelievers.
Lions Club International President JULIEN C HYER will attend Pecos Lions meeting at noon on Wednesday June 29. Fort Stockton Lions are urged to attend to hear the head of Lions Clubs worldwide.
Rain Wednesday afternoon reached seventy hundredths of an inch per H H Butz a federal weather observer. The shower was widespread from Hovey to Fort Stockton and the Baker ranch extending across the county. June to date stands at 1.07 inches and year to date 6.49 inches. Fred Ebling formerly night relief operator for Santa Fe during May and June in this town has been transferred to Snyder to assume duties at the Santa Fe station.
The Methodist Standard Training School in the area ends Friday after a week led by Dr. Richard Spann from Dallas with assistances from Reverends Marion Wheat and Joe Scrimshire. Courses covered Young People Division program, church school curriculum materials, formation of the canon, and Bible origins. Despite small attendance, quality and impact are praised by Rev. C. R. Hooton.
The Reverend Cecil Lang of Kilgore arrived Thursday afternoon for the opening service of a meeting he is holding at the Presbyterian Church.
National director and supervisor for Texas Mrs Etta Davidson will attend a Woodman Circle meeting in Fort Stockton on Saturday. She will direct memorial services for former member Miss Hazel Tharpe at the Community House Saturday evening at 8:30.
Friends of Kathryn McSpedden learn of her May 17 marriage to Carl Redding of Brawley California in Yuma Arizona. She is daughter of Mrs Anna McSpedden and was a popular 1924 1928 high school student here. The couple will reside at 175 C Street.
A. T. McCue, a special life saving field representative of the National Red Cross, will visit Fort Stockton on Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25, to lecture on First Aid and Life Saving and to supervise examinations for trainees under local instructor Mrs. Cleve Nunn. Trainees passing may earn badges. the Red Cross program is free.
