Land owners of Fort Stockton and Pecos County discussed forming a Trans Pecos Soil Conservation District under the Texas Soil Conservation Act. A five member committee was named to circulate petitions and seek a public hearing by the State Soil Conservation Board, with a June 22 meeting set to organize.
In a church meeting the First Baptist Church of Fort Stockton extended a call to Rev. N. E. McGuire to become pastor. McGuire, born in Bell County, Tex, has served as supply preacher in Fort Stockton and previously led Immanuel Baptist Church in San Angelo and other Texas churches. The McGuires will move to the parsonage and their daughter is Mrs. Horace McKay of Fort Worth.
A Tuesday morning meeting of landowners discussed preliminary plans to create a soil conservation district in the Sans Pecos region. The gathering may spur formation of a district to coordinate landowner and operator efforts, boosting soil preservation and preventing erosion across Reeves Pecos Ward and Presidio counties.
City Council reviews manager plan as the Comanche Trail Conference for young people meets in Fort Stockton at James Rooney Park the week of June 13. The gathering is sponsored by Christian churches across the area with El Paso represented for the first time and San Angelo planned for next year. Rev. Wade Hampton of First Christian Church directs. Rev. Fr Aubrey of Fort Stockton serves as business manager. Mrs. Aubrey is Dean of Women and teaches The Why of Missions. Faculty will include ministers from Pecos Fort Worth El Paso Odessa and Midland. Enrollment expected to reach 60.
A Sanderson man died of head injuries after a car overturned on the Sanderson Highway two miles southeast of Fort Stockton early Monday. Quirino N. Alva, 32, died en route to Fort Stockton. Juan Navarez lost an arm and is recovering. Two other occupants escaped. Funeral services for Alva were held in Sanderson Tuesday. Navarez remained hospitalized.
Fort Stockton opens Barkis and Caldwell Grocery on Kansas Street at Highway 290 offering groceries picnic supplies and ice with curb service. Owners Pete Barkis and Derwood Caldwell run the shop while Barkis remains a Trans Pecos Airways mechanic and Caldwell brings experience from Stockton Feed and Supply.
Members of the First Presbyterian Church voted to buy the half block southeast of the Fort Stockton school campus for a new sanctuary and educational building. The land on Oklahoma Street between Second and Third Streets costs 83 000. Plans by San Angelo architect John G Becker are approved in Colonial style. Funds on hand exceed 25 000 with additional pledges, financing discussions to begin to start construction promptly.
In Reeves County near Pecos a 1440 acre farm owned by John J. Dorr signals new cotton expansion as the Pecos Basin eyes 50 60 thousand acres of new cultivation this year and possibly 300 500 thousand acres long term. Water power and financing drive the effort with large tractors and land clearing equipment key to transforming brush land into irrigation farms.
Trans-Texas Airways alters Fort Stockton timings with arrivals at 12 34 noon and 8 54 p m from earlier 2 10 and 9 25 p m and departures at 6 45 a m and 2 24 p m. New lines to Eagle Pass Del Rio San Antonio Valley and El Paso to open later this month.
Hill D Hudson a Pecos attorney and 47 year old Republican announces candidacy for State Senator in the 29th District. He cites district reapportionment, criminal code reform, veteran and family aid, school funding by need, and strong constituent representation as his platform during Fort Stockton discussions with local voters.
City council to discuss operating under a city manager form with an open meeting at City Hall on Friday night June 18 at 8. Citizens invited as advocates cite centralized administration and clearer delegated authority. The council also notes the resignation of city engineer R F Bundy effective June 15 and his shift to private practice.
The Fort Stockton American Legion Post 234 voted at a Model Cafe dinner to elect Tommy Wilson as post commander for the coming year. Lloyd Ligon and Bill Drake will serve as first and second vice commanders, with Harrison Bullock as adjutant, Billy Moody as finance officer, George Pina sergeant at arms, Paul Crone as chaplain, and Henry Cook as historian. The new officers will take office at the next regular meeting.
Mr and Mrs Layton Nix and family came home Saturday after a two week visit with relatives in Central Texas. Mrs C C Nix, mother of Mr Nix, accompanied them for a three week stay.
Fort Stockton's oldest ready to wear shop has been sold to new owners Miss Mary Lewis and Miss Pauline McWilliams. The Jennie Nunn Shop established 120 years ago becomes Mary Pauline Shop continuing to carry national brands, gifts and children's wear at the Ward Winter building on Main Street. Mrs Nunn remains in Fort Stockton and Mr Nunn heads City Utilities.
The Rev. E. G. Aubrey and a family visit Colorado City for a shower honoring Miss Velma Harper. Mrs. Aubrey serves as a house party member for the event.
