Fort Stockton Independent School District trustees plan a regular meeting at 8 p.m in the administration building. They will hear from Thomas Y Pickett & Co tax consultants, discuss student use of the golf course, depository bids, trustee positions election, a Community Public Service Co easement, school personnel matters, applied music, a teacher pregnancy policy and the all weather track payroll deductions for Texas Teachers Assn dues.
Vaughn Tatum assumes duties as minister of music and education at First Baptist Church in Blue Ribbon City. He arrives after leading Stockton Singers on tour in South Texas and previously preached during a spring revival. Tatum, a 1963 Brownfield High School graduate, earned a 1968 Hardin-Simmons bachelor in music and later U S Army service at Fort Bragg. He will receive two master’s degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary this December. He and wife Kathy have two sons, David and Cris. Previous posts include Central Baptist Spring Lake, First Baptist Brownfield, Crescent Heights Abilene, Lamar Street Sweetwater, and Gomez Baptist.
The Fort Stockton City Council’s 8 a.m. Tuesday session was canceled after it could not meet with Clajon Gas Co. officials. A 10 a.m. meeting at city hall will include the board of equalization and cover gas contract negotiations.
Sunday edition notes the Fort Stockton city council discusses bids for a shop building and a fire department dryer unit. City manager authorized to call for bank depository bids and the aldermen review a United Fund survey and plans to amend the 1973-74 budget. They also consider water plans and an advisory council member role, plus annexation of the Beacon Truck Stop property.
Fort Stockton boards for city county and school district property owners hold sessions. The school district board meets at 10 a.m. Monday and again June 18 at the administration building. City board 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at city hall with local officials. Pecos County board meets 9 a.m. Monday June 18 in the courthouse annex. Officials aim to fix and equalize property values. taxpayers urged to attend.
Four charter members of the Fort Stockton Noon Lions Club received chevron awards at a Wednesday meeting. Hart Johnson Fred Ellyson Sr Karl Butz and Jack Hubbs have been club members for 45 years.
The column recounts Herman Lehmann, abducted from Llano and raised by Apaches, avoiding Texas Rangers in 1875. In his sixteenth year Lehmann killed a medicine man to save himself, seized his gun and horse, then fled with bow, arrows, blanket and provisions across arid plains and rugged terrain.
Fort Stockton will start its summer recreation program this Monday and run through July 20 led by chairman Floyd Coker. The schedule error fixed indicates beginner swimmers should be those who cannot swim at least 10 feet. Activities include advanced beginner swimming, swimming, adult programs, diving, arts and crafts, gymnastics, twirling, tennis, basketball, golf and home dance. Registration deadline was Friday.
Plans expand for the pony express ride scheduled August 4 between Alpine and Fort Stockton, according to local chamber of commerce manager Clark.
Pecos County Commissioners hear a proposal to lease land at James Rooney Memorial Park for a miniature golf course during the 10 a.m. Monday session. Also on the agenda are the 4 H Club van, radar equipment talks, a case for former hospital administrator Roger McLaughlin, filling a vacant Justice of the Peace post, Alpine visitors and a Pony Express postage stamp plan designed by Harmon Hann.
Alvina Baiza aged 89, widow for 30 years, quilts without glasses and grinds corn for tortillas. She cooks on a wood stove, gardens daily, and eschews a cane. Born January 6 1884 in Terlingua, she has 6 sons and 4 daughters, eight living, and many grandchildren.
