The West Texas ex change papers largely back Briscoe for governor over the Corpus Christi opponent. The Pioneer pushed its stance early, urging high voter turnout, while the piece notes the omission of endorsing Wayne Connally for lieutenant governor over Bill Hobby.
Frank K. Baker notes Connally carried Pecos County and views Hobby as a provocative Texas Senate presiding officer choice. He warns conservative factions and fears Hobby's union and leftist endorsements, hoping Governor-elect Briscoe will curb him and keep Austin steady next year.
The under construction Highway 16 between Chihuahua City and Ojinaga Mexico is slated to finish July 18 to honor Benito Juarez. West Texas Highway 67 members learned the date at an April 28 Chihuahua City meeting with Mexican officials.
Dorbandt J. Barton II, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dorbandt Barton of Dallas and formerly of Fort Stockton, died Monday in a Greenville motorcycle car crash. Funeral at Restlands Memorial Chapel Dallas with burial there. Memorials to the White Rock YMCA. Survived by parents, two sisters, grandmother, and grandparents. Father was a Fort Stockton native and former Texas A&M student and coach.
Plans are finalized for a 2:30 p.m. Sunday dedication of the new Imperial Cemetery. The service will be led by Rev. Monte Wike with participation from all local churches, the Community Improvement Organization and cemetery board which will manage lot sales, finances and interment records.
In Pecos County runoff voters backed Dolph Briscoe for governor and re elected Jesus M. Gonzales as Precinct 3 constable. Briscoe led statewide with 1,394 votes to Frances Farenthold 727, while Connally beat Hobby 1,168 to 900 and Sanders led Yarbrough 1,344 to 734. Calvert won comptroller 1,159 to 829. Gonzales defeated R. J. Harris 1,033 to 639 locally with 952 daytime and 81 absentee votes for Gonzales versus 567 daytime and 72 absentee for Harris.
Fort Stockton chamber directors report plans to form a Fort Stockton high school unit this August following a Midland example. Monroe Sales Agency and Eastside 66 Service Station join as new members as the group also discusses a repaint of the blue tourist stripe and local panel involvement for Pecos Trail tourism.
Boys ages nine to twelve registered for the annual Pitch Hit Throw contest must report to Pat Taylor Field on South Rio Street at 1 p.m. Saturday. Deadline for registering was Sunday. Participants compete within their age level and should bring a baseball glove and wear tennis shoes. Cleats are not permitted. Bats and balls are to be noted on page 8.
Volunteers for the 1972 Water Carnival meet at Comanche Springs Swimming Pool tonight at 7 30 p m. Tom Polson and Floyd Coker lead the committee. All interested in this phase of the show are urged to attend.
Refugio G. Rey 68 of Imperial died at 11 a.m. Tuesday after a four month illness. Services at 4 p.m. today in the Small Community House with burial in Imperial Cemetery. Fort Stockton Funeral Home in charge. Survivors include his wife five sons Heliodor Refugio David Raul and Joe all of Imperial three daughters Juanita Hortencia and Dora, three brothers five sisters 20 grandchildren and a great grandchild. He was born July 4 1903 in Terlingua and was a Catholic. He moved to Imperial 40 years ago from Terlingua.
Mary Ethel Dunn marks two decades as owner-manager of the Retail Merchants Association and Credit Bureau of Fort Stockton. She began with the FM A in 1952 after Bill Blaydes sold the business. earlier, M M Nicholson and Geneva Fry contributed to its history. Dunn studied at Sul Ross and the University of Texas before entering journalism with The Pioneer.
