Dozen ex chamber manager Nolan B Conner returns to town to wrap moving to Alamogordo and notes progress in Pecos Valley sulphur development. He speaks of melting point under 300 degrees and transport by insulated tank trucks and rail cars.
A gale force storm moved through Fort Stockton Thursday afternoon causing extensive damage. Power lines snapped and a roof portion blown from Elliot and Waldron Abstract Co on Nelson Street. Winds lasted about 30 minutes with debris and overturned objects suggesting shifting directions.
New families are relocating to Fort Stockton to join Duval Corp in Pecos County sulphur work, estimated 8 to 10 families from Orchard and Rosenberg. Production at the pilot plant reportedly suspended to test Frasche method feasibility. Santa Fe Railroad studies a $1,000,000 12 mile line from the plant site to near McCamey road crossing, built at railroad expense once production starts. Line crosses Sec 19, Block 114, T and St. L. Sinclair Oil also active in the region.
Margaret Laurence, an 18 year old Fort Stockton High School graduate and May graduate, has been named winner of the 1967 West Texas Press Association $800 college scholarship announced by Bill Turner publisher at Littlefield, chair.
Mrs. Jesus Rodriguez aged 68 died Monday night at Memorial Hospital after a stay since May 31. A funeral mass will be read at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Rev. Lucassen officiating. Born Dolores Hernandez in Mexico on October 21, 1898, she is survived by her husband and three sons Francisco Elias and Alberto, all of Fort.
Cope-Brown Lumber Co. of Fort Stockton named low bidder at 26 200 for remodeling and adding office space at the Fort Stockton school administration building. The bid includes 1 400 for paving and a 100 day construction period. Other bids were 30 680 from J W Cooper Construction Odessa and 28 632 from Alexander Construction Co Fort Stockton. Work to start later this month. Board also ta bled indoor pool bid at Fort Stockton High School.
Fred Hardy 38 recently moved to Fort Stockton from San Angelo. He lost his father at 16 hearing at 21 and his left hand and lower arm at 36. A May graduate of San Angelo Business College he earned a 96.6 average the highest in school history. Hardy runs tax work and bookkeeping with Wayne McFadden and is a self trained lip reading specialist who answers questions despite being unable to hear his own voice.
Edward G. Samuel joins the Fort Stockton Soil Conservation Service as a soil conservationist. A Brady resident, he holds a BS in agriculture from Southeast Texas State College in San Marcos. He and wife Tommye live at 900 N. Everts and attend the First Christian Church.
Harry A. Miller Jr., 39, will become Fort Stockton city manager about June 26. He leaves Brownwood where he is assistant city manager and city secretary after a screening committee recommendation. Miller succeeds Gene Higgins who resigned to join the U S State Department in South Vietnam. He is a Howard Payne College graduate with prior Leather goods plant management and four years in the U S Air Force. Continued on Page 3.
A Lubbock firm, Panhandle Construction Co., was awarded a 376304 dollar contract by the City Council for Fort Stockton’s new sewer system. The bid was the low figure among seven, with work to start around July 1 and finish by January 15 next year pending health and EPA approval. The project includes a new treatment plant beside the Santa Fe Railway two miles northeast of the current facility, a network of about 45700 feet of 8 to 15 inch lines, and an oxidation ditch plant.
The first screwworm case in Pecos County livestock this year was confirmed Wednesday by the Screwworm Eradication Program in Mission. County Agricultural Agent Pat Garner said the case involved a lamb on the Mine Yard Smith ranch 21 miles east of Fort Stockton near 0.8, 290. Ranchers in the area are urged to be vigilant for further cases.
Two boys aged 11 and 9 in Fort Stockton confessed to setting four fires and committing vandalism after police questioning. The first blaze damaged the Philip Robbins residence on Rio Street on May 12, with leaves piled beside logs as the ignition point. Firefighters later found three small fires at Comanche Elementary School, including a map on fire and a smoldering drawer in a storage area.
Law officers hunted a man after an early Saturday armed robbery attempt at the Trading Post in Fort Stockton. Store manager Ed Brown said a Latin American man entered at 3 38 a m and pulled a knife during the holdup attempt.
Fort Stockton plans a donkey softball game at Little League Field set for 8 p m Thursday. The Lions Club accepted a challenge from the Jaycees to meet on the donkey field of battle with local businessmen expected to provide fast moving action and advance tickets available from the Jaycees.
Judge Walter L. Buenger of Fort Stockton was elected district governor for the year starting July at the Odessa Lions District 2- T-3 convention in Chicago. He is the first Fort Stockton member to attain the post. Jake Francis was named a Kerrville camp director, El Paso was chosen as next convention city, and Brenda Jane Gallemore won the Queen’s Contest representing Fort Stockton.
