Fort Stockton community leaders organize a large four day celebration from July 4 to July 5 with games, stunts, a noon barbecue on the courthouse lawn, and crews handling arrangements. Committees formed include General, Finance, Beef Rustling, Entertainment, and Table, all to plan meals, pits, advertising, and logistics.
Nine year old Master Marshal Riser son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Riser was fatally injured when a runaway team threw him from a hay mower. He suffered a fractured skull and paralysis before passing away twenty four hours after the incident. Funeral services were held at the Moody residence with interment in East Hill Cemetery. The Riser family has the sympathy of the Buenavista and local communities.

The Santa Rita well east of Fort Stockton near Reagan county continues flowing at intervals, signaling a potentially large producer. Texan Oil & Land Company VP Frank T. Pickrell says a 65-8 casing will reach the sand at 5 050 feet and steel storage is ordered. Ten to fifteen days remain before completion, with visitors noting the well’s promising indicators and its positive impact on the Fort Stockton area.
The film West of Chicago featuring Charles Jones plays Saturday at the Queen with an Al St. John comedy. The story set along the Mexican border includes Jones leaping from a horse to a moving train and a ghostly portrayal that unsettles criminals.
The sheriff warns stock owners to keep animals in, or face enforcement of the stock law on irrigated land. Deputy C. E. Gilman notes enforcement will begin to curb damage to crops. Sheriff D. S. Barker signs the notice.
A stockman I. T. Pryor Jr. sprayed an insecticide in his hen parlor with kerosene and lighted a match, causing a blaze that consumed the interior. His chickens roosted in a tree that night, while the incident is described as a bold publicity effort by a public spirited citizen and guinea fowl expert.
Early threshing near Fort Stockton signals a bumper 1923 grain crop. Reports include Pryor and Wilson with 40 acres of barley at 42 bushels per acre and 10 acres of oats at 75 bushels per acre, plus Burney Ligon with 10 acres of oats at 70 bushels per acre.
Fort Stockton and Pecos County will be represented at the Sul Ross Normal summer session by a group of local educators and students. J H Head superintendent of Fort Stockton public schools and Miss Thelma Van Trease of Buenavista will teach. Also listed are Gage Lloyd, Myrtle Lou Head, Pearl Swinney, Lela Mae Skinner, Lela Verge Jackson, Emma Lea Williams, Weatherby, T Jernigan and other local students and staff who will participate in the program.
Miss Mable Flora of San Antonio and Mr Dave Humphrey of this place wed in San Antonio on Monday June 4. The groom works as an oil well driller in the Fort Stockton field and the couple motored home Tuesday to reside at Hotel Stockton.

Under the East Hill Cemetery Association the service at the Methodist Church featured a mixed choir and talks by Revs. Reuben Smith and F. L. Glisson praising departed loved ones. Congregation then placed flowers on each mound at East Hill Cemetery as a gentle shower began during prayers by Dr. Lloyd.
Mrs. A. W. Dunn and Mrs. Sam Dibrell hosted a green and white themed bridge party with six tables. Mrs. W. H. Moore won high score and received a handmade handkerchief, while Mrs. Dalton Moore of Sweetwater earned the guest favor handkerchief. Mrs. Geo. Cato took the consolation prize.
Mrs. Willie Taylor died at the Lancaster residence a few hours before a message from Mrs. F A Lacy of Lancaster announced the death. Her husband Dr R F E Taylor had died thirteen months earlier in Fort Stockton after years there. The city mourns the loss of this estimable couple and the influence they left behind.
Ladies from the Baptist church hosted a handkerchief shower for Grandpa and Grandma Wilson after the W M A meeting. They received many well wishes before leaving for San Angelo the next day. The notice invites attendance in Fort Stockton July 4 and 5.
