Ambulance service converted from private to public administration this week with no interruption and smooth operation. Owen Funeral Home, long-time operator, discontinued its role in the ambulance service.

Combat veteran Captain James C. Pitts will address three Fort Stockton groups this week. He appears at 6 a.m. for Sun Rise Optimist Club and at noon for Jaycees, both at the Sands Restaurant on Monday. Thursday he speaks at a joint Historical Society Beta Sigma Phi meeting at Riggs Museum. The Pioneer misdated a Wednesday meeting. it now occurs Thursday night. All sessions are open to the public and urged.

The first ambulance call since the service joined a city county cooperative was Thursday at 7 05 p m when Mrs Curry Spence was taken from 100 S Texas to Memorial Hospital after a fall. She was later transferred to Odessa. Police said the run went very smoothly with Officer Mike Hill and Officer Don Hubbard assisting.
Fort Stockton public library reports 1959 circulation at 75,?…, up 2,746 from 1968, completing a decade of growth. 1960 circulation was 10,794, with book stock at 17,740 in 1969 and periodicals rising to 575. Adult and juvenile circulation show seasonal shifts while reference use edges fiction. Fort Stockton ranks eighth in local circulation within the El Paso District.
Fort Stockton teens plan a busy summer with the Youth Center offering dancing, ping pong, pool, TV, cards, meals and reading from 6 to 10 p.m. on Mon Tue Thu, 6 p.m. to midnight Fri, 2 p.m. to midnight Sat, and 2 to 4 30 p.m. Sun. The center is closed Wednesday and open only to junior high students Monday.
Greg J. Lay news editor and chief photographer of the Pioneer resigns and will quit Fort Stockton this month to become regional news editor of the Denton Record Chronicle in Denton Texas with 13,500 circulation. He plans to attend North Texas State University this fall as an undergraduate student. Lay joined the Pioneer in 1967 and left a semi weekly edition. His photography and feature stories have won Texas Press Association honors. He authored two weekly columns Embers and On The Spot With Your Reporter. Final Pioneer edition is June 21. He and his wife Kathy and daughter Misty will move that weekend. Lay has served as director of Pecos County Community Action Agency and Fort Stockton Public Library, and as secretary and president of Sunrise Optimist Club. John Dunn will become Optimist Club president on June 15.
Ismael Ortega, a 20 year old Fort Stockton man accused of rape, escaped from Deputy Sheriff Louis Davis while being taken to a doctor's office. Local search concentrates in Fort Stockton and Sanderson as officers chase the fugitive who ran away from Davis' car after the alleged crime. He had been in Pecos County jail since Sunday following a Sanderson arrest and return by Deputy Sheriff B. B. Smith.
A routine Fort Stockton Independent School District meeting is set for Tuesday with bids opening for the new steel maintenance building. Agenda items include insurance coverage, the 1970 71 budget, automation plans, personnel info, and a possible school for Licensed Vocation Nurses alongside routine business. The Pecos County commissioners plan a separate meeting, with a budget hearing and board of equalization on Monday June 15.
Fort Stockton City Council will study proposed ordinances at Tuesday's meeting. One ordinance would regulate overhead gasoline tanks in residential areas and another would set a rate schedule for ambulance calls under a city county operation plan. Also to be reviewed are tax valuations on property annexed to the city on West 290. The city manager's recommendations and reports round out the agenda.
