C. H. Brooks of Fort Jockton, partner with S. E. Howe in Westside Wrecking Yard, sold his interest to Howe and will become engineer at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. He reports after retirement of the current engineer and will oversee power heating and electrical systems in all hospital buildings.
Two men drowned in the Pecos River on Tuesday as the region faces rising death counts on streets and highways. The notice urges obedience to safety rules and highlights an advertisement on Page 4 promoting careful driving to reduce fatalities.

Two Fort Stockton oil workers from Olson Drilling Company, Barney Wise and Howard Baird, drowned while wading in the Pecos River near the Imperial Grandfalls highway bridge. Baird, unable to swim, fell in and Wise attempted a rescue. both bodies were recovered and transported to Fort Stockton for burial. Wise, 34, was single. Baird’s family traveled from Ardmore, Oklahoma, for services planned in Ardmore.
Pecos County 4 H youth members prepare for next year shows with 23 calves at feed and a record number of lambs due for finish. Grain and hay are stored. bank and local support aid feed purchases and storage. Members list includes Warnock Hill Moore Reeves and others feeding Herefords Angus and lambs from multiple ranches.
Fort Stockton softball teams dropped two Sunday afternoon contests amid strong winds and dust. Marfa’s City Drug defeated Fort Stockton Fire Department 12 to 17 as wind and errors favored the visitors. In McCamey, the American Legion team lost to Butternut in a dust storm with no final score reported. Local lights installation is pending.
The Pecos County A and M Club invites members, families, and former junior college A and M students to a Sunday barbecue at Baker Ranch headquarters, 28 miles east of Fort Farris. President Baker, class of 1924, says an engaging program will discuss Sen. H. L. Winfield's proposal to divide permanent UT funds with other state land grant schools.
Phillip Rooney Post No 234 American Legion will hold a meeting Monday night June 10 at 8 oclock in the Community Hall. All members and prospective members urged to attend. The Legion earned 100.87 as its share of proceeds from the Plunkett Tent Show which toured locally the first three days of the week.
Fort Stockton golfers will play a weekend blind bogie event ending Sunday evening June 9. Entrants receive three bogie holes picked by George Hillger Jr Bill Dunn and G C Nunn. Low net score on those holes wins. Play starts today. Prizes are golf balls.
Miss Jean Nunn daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Nunn graduated from Hockaday Junior College Dallas in an outdoor ceremony Tuesday afternoon June 4. She served as treasurer of the Inter-American Athenium and earned a varsity letter for athletics. She took part in the choral festival closing the school year. The Nunns traveled to Dallas Saturday for the end of school activities.
Mr and Mrs W H Raynor are installing refrigeration and display equipment in the south part of the Main Street Carthen building adjoining the Aviation Cafe and opposite Safeway. They plan to open a meat market and delicatessen within the next few days. Raynor brings 15 years in Gainesville and Stockton Market experience and once worked for W B Carthen.
Garland Williams, a former B 29 aerial engineer discharged as a flight officer, becomes partner with Roy Lannom in Auto Electric Co. Williams bought Dave Lamberth’s interest after Lamberth moved to McAlester Oklahoma. The Lamberths sold their East Third Street home to Mr and Mrs Henry Rolater. Lamberth plans to enter business in the Oklahoma mining center.
Fort Stockton Lions chose two sponsors and named delegates. Miss Joan Slaughter, a Fort Stockton High School student, will represent the club at the George B. McCamey celebration in McCamey June 14 and 15. Miss Iris Gaskill will be the Fort Stockton sponsor for the Pecos Rodeo on July 4.
Fort Stockton Lions Club unveils an adult high chair presented by President John Vickrey. The chair mirrors an infant design but scales up to seat Lions of various sizes for meetings and honors new fathers and distinguished members.
The Fort Stockton Lions Club votes to send the incoming president to the Lions International convention in Philadelphia in July and to send board members to district and state conventions in Big Spring on June 17 18 and 19. The club, among the largest in District 2 T, has 12 delegates and will elect officers next Wednesday with delegates announced after the election.
Announcement yesterday reported the sale of the Ellyson Insurance Agency to Clyde Smith of the Smith Insurance Agency. Policies were transferred to Mr Smith's books in a deal arranged with F. J. Ellyson, owner of the agency. The Ellyson Agency had been run for ten years by the late Judge R. H. Gray, who died five weeks ago in Hot Springs New Mexico.
Mr. and Mrs. Audie Cox and family have relocated to Carlsbad California where Mr. Cox will work in a garage. He previously worked with the Fay Hunsaker butane firm here for several years and left last month, returning to finalize moving arrangements this week.
The Pecos County Chamber of Commerce board studies a bond financed public hospital for Trans Pecos. A $250000 facility could be retired in ten years with a seven percent levy, using former bond savings to fund a new issue. Plans call for a 30 to 40 bed Fort Stockton hospital with Iraan clinic beds and open access for doctors and patients.
The Daily Vacation Bible School of the Baptist Church will open Monday June 10 for ten days of instruction for children and youth in the church and community. Rev A E Davis and Mrs Davis will direct, with Mrs Davisson as principal and Mr Davisson directing handiwork. Registration tomorrow at 9 am followed by a parade. classes begin 8:30 am with June 19 closing exercises at 8 pm. Superintendents include Mrs S A Decker beginners Mrs Virgil Kelly primary Mrs Sim Reeves junior and Mrs J W Butler intermediate.
Attendance averages 74 over the first four days as three churches cooperate in a co operative Vacation Bible School in Methodist educational buildings this week. Teachers listed include E E Whitworth and Peggy Pouncey among beginners, with sessions from 9 to 11 a m daily for five days next week and a closing Friday morning.
The Pecos district reports record traffic enforcement with more licenses issued. Gilbert Bell processed 456 May license applications plus renewals as inspections rise for all new licenses. Learner drivers must hold beginner licenses and be accompanied by an adult. patrols aim to reduce deaths and injuries from accidents.
Miss Billie Ray Binion received her degree in home economics from Sul Ross College in Alpine at exercises held last month. She plans a summer rest at her parents’ home, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Binion, before deciding her fall plans.
Billy Wayne Shannon underwent a major operation Tuesday at an El Paso hospital to correct a spinal injury. He was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Shannon and Leslie Nance.
