A historical tally lists numerous wells with spud dates from 1929, depths reached, and notable outcomes across Pecos County. Entries include gas shows at several sites, oil discoveries or tests, salt and lime top depths, and various test preparations, with operators such as Atlantic Trees, Gulf Production, Phillips Petroleum, and Imperial Oil Co among others.
Phillips Petroleum plans a deep test on No 1 Courtney 10 miles NW of Fort Stockton after shallow production at 1,345-7 ft. Deepening to 4,500 ft is planned if production declines. A twin well to No 1 Courtney will target horizons below 1,300 ft following 900 barrels from the initial 1,345-7 ft interval. Location details noted for survey blocks and lines.
The Pace Auto Co. lists Ford sales including FE A Gilbert sport roadster and Dittman Drilling Co truck, reflecting a busy past week. W C Jones, repair expert, is noted for service and requests continued business. FE L Tippit, jeweler, is also mentioned in relation to the firm’s advertisements.
Promoters Raymond McKay and Farris Baker announce Fort Stockton's Fourth Annual Rodeo Celebration set for Friday and Saturday June 14 and 15. Event features bronc riding steer and calf roping wild horse race kids calf riding and bulldogging with dancing each night. Notable entrants include Bob Crosby John Brown Allen Holder Will Nix Shorty Creed Chuck Reynolds and others. Tickets go on sale Monday June 10.
At the regular Wednesday luncheon the Fort Stockton Lions Club elected officers for the ensuing year. President D. S. Beeman. Vice presidents H. G. Watson H. H. Butz Hart Johnson. Secretary Karl Butz. Treasurer Harry Harris. Lion Tanner Harry Durham. Tail Twister Jimmie Shropshire. Directors J. M. Rooney D. J. Sibley C. E. Casebier G. W. Rose. The club, in existence one year, is praised as the most active and livest club in Spring City with a future aimed at greater civic improvement.
Roland Warnock, a state highway crew member near Tunis Creek thirty miles east of Fort Stockton, was badly burned when he lifted a lid on a pot of boiling asphalt. The hot liquid splashed his hands and face but spared his eyes during topping operations on a new causeway.
Doc Perkins longtime barber in town and more recently in Winkler County oil fields died May 12 at a Pecos sanitarium. Burial was in Sulphur Springs, Texas, his former hometown.
A Wednesday evening storm struck Fort Stockton at 6 o clock, devastating Block One and 7D. Hail the size of baseballs wrecked roofs, windows and livestock. crops including cotton and alfalfa suffered total losses. Many farmers lack crop insurance and face replanting after stupendous damage. No damage estimates yet due to vast area.
Fort Stockton shows sustained building momentum in both residential and business districts. builders pursue permanent modern structures as demand for offices, apartments, and housing outpaces supply, with daily inquiries at the Pioneer for rentals and housing listings.
F. W. Sherman of Elk City Kansas arrived last Friday and on June 1st became the local manager for the Texas Louisiana Power Company, succeeding G A Johnston who will be transferred elsewhere. Johnston leaves Fort Stockton with many friends and his family.
Born to Mr and Mrs H G Watson on Thursday June 6 a son named H G Jr The father is vice president of the Fort Stockton First National Bank.
A Fort Stockton music promoter calls on boys and girls aged seven and up to join a new town band. They offer three months of free instruction with instrument purchase and a small tuition for those who own instruments. Interested youths urged to visit Anfonson School of Music for enrollment and kickoff.
The Kansas City Mexico & Orient Railway Co. board approved a 5.7 million dollar construction program. Two segments receive 2.2 million for a 65 mile San Angelo to Sonora extension, and 3.5 million for the Alpine to Presidio gap. Funding is by Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe. Construction planning proceeds with ICC approval and contracts to be let after mid June. Out of town directors W. L. Aldwell and J. D. Jackson attended.
A Texas Railroad Commission hearing this week will decide the right of the Yates and West Texas Railroad to build a 30 mile line from Rankin to Iraan. Arguments for Yates and West Texas are scheduled Thursday morning while Orient officials challenging the plan will appear Friday.
A large crew of workmen began Monday rebuilding the outside plant of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. at this place. When finished the project will materially improve the service provided by the company.
On Monday July 10 the United States plans to release new smaller money while removing over five billion in large sized bills from circulation. Walter O Woods treasury official says elimination will take a half century, with most old notes vanishing by year end. Local display of the new notes appears at Fort Stockton and Pecos County banks inviting public viewing.
Walter Caminer of Marfa, formerly of Fort Worth, becomes manager of the Morris Winkler Store on June 1. He plans to stay and participate in Fort Stockton civic life, identifies as a Scottish Rite Mason and charter member of the Fort Worth American Legion Post, and notes service in the 36th Division. Pioneer welcomes him and wishes success.
Buell and Hagan No 14 University block 16 in Pecos County 35 miles east of Fort Stockton was flowing 3 to 4 million cu ft of sweet gas from 1320 feet in anhydrite. Upon entry for cleaning and casing the hole caved 130 feet of open hole but 400 feet of fluid remained. The well, potentially opening another Pecos County pool, is watched closely.
A roundup lists students returning from work or study in ten days at Texas and neighboring states. Names include Marvin Butz and Mildred Bihl from Texas University Austin, Hellen Harral from Texas Christian University Fort Worth, Nancy Moore from Our Lady of the Lake College San Antonio, and Wesley Adams from Oklahoma University Oklahoma City, among others.
O T Jernigan and several Stockton youths travel to Alpine to study at Sul Ross College. Edna Kicks and Vivian Odneal head to Baylor College Belton for summer courses. Marvin Thomas leaves for Abilene to rejoin Simmons University. Margaret Thomson continues at the College of Industrial Arts. Johnnie Odom, teaching at Pyote high, will study at Southern Methodist University.
Miss Doris Lea daughter of Mr and Mrs Marsh Lea of Jasper sails Thursday for a two weeks West Indies cruise with a touring party. The former home economics head at Jasper High School plans sight seeing in Havana Port au Prince San Domingo San Juan Kingston St Thomas and other points with a college friend.
C. P. Mann, Orient engineer on the hill run, bought the Ten Eyke residence at the junction of the O. S. T. and Front street through Fred Cliett the live stock and real estate agent. Mann and his family have moved from the Blaydes residence on Front street to their new home at the start of the week.
Reverend Ezell reports several June marriages at Sheffield Fort Stockton and Rankin. On June 1 Charles Hale Jr and Lene Welch wed. Virgil Ryan and Edwin Howell wed. on June 3 Henry C Brooks married Natalie Groebel.
