Lions program in Fort Stockton tested residents on community facts with two five person teams and a quiz master. Questions covered climate population census Pecos County oil and gas fields and local infrastructure, highlighting how few residents know exact figures beyond what the Pioneer published.
Fort Stockton will host the statewide Junior Champ track and swimming meet June 14 and 15 with 800 to 1,000 young athletes aged 10 to 17. Speaker Bobby Morrow will address a barbecue June 14 at 6 pm in the new FSHS stadium. Local officials announce chairs for event duties and require out-of-town entrants to have adult supervision and school or organization sponsorship.
At the 49th annual Stockton High School graduation the valedictorian Marie Lee Johnson led the top awards including Rice University and Danforth scholarships. Other top honorees were Myra Stafford Pryor, Charles E Oswalt, Jary Margaret Baker, Buddy Love, and Jane Cox with various scholastic and service honors. A personal letter from a graduate’s father serving in Germany added a warm moment.
Fort Stockton recorded a 5 p.m. shower with hail and .32 inches of precipitation, bringing the yearly total to 5.17 inches. Cooler temperatures dominated the week with highs in the low 90s and lows in the 60s, while the forecast calls for afternoon thundershowers and near normal temperatures.
Deadline to register at the Chamber of Commerce is Monday June 17 for a summer recreation program directed by Flora Coker. The program runs Monday through Friday with activities including swimming golf tennis archery physical fitness arts and crafts and teenage recreation coached by Mary Moore Ronnie Ray and Mrs C R McKenzie at Fort Stockton Junior High facilities.
Funeral services for Roscoe Colville Love were conducted at First Methodist Church Roanoke Texas where he served as a long time steward. A retired teacher and farmer born September 30 1880 in Bradley County Tennessee he moved to a Mesquite area farm as a child and later graduated from Mesquite High School. He spent 35 years in teaching including Dallas schools and Dallas County and served as Ranoke High School superintendent.
John Oates a rancher banker and former builder died in his sleep at his Fort Stockton home Sunday night after months of declining health. Born February 8 1887 near Dublin he worked as a bricklayer with his father and moved to Fort Stockton with construction ties including the First Methodist Church he helped establish ranch land and irrigated farms in 7 D area he helped organize Pecos County State Bank serving as director until his death He was a Methodist Mason and school board member survived by three daughters Ruth Hebert Alpine B E Mitchell and another unnamed daughter.
Bathing revue entries are being accepted for the 1963 Fort Stockton Water Carnival at Comanche Springs July 18 to 20. Mrs. Art Berry chairs, with Gene Higgins of the Lions Club as co chair, announcing prizes for age divisions and Miss Fort Stockton contest supports.
The Mitchell plant of Northern Natural Gas Co. near Fort Stockton is the world’s largest carbon dioxide removal facility. Opened in February 1954, it processes 220 million cubic feet of gas daily to yield 145 million cubic feet of residue or sweet gas. The 57 acre site employs 36 workers with a monthly payroll around 24 300 dollars.
Port Stockton leaders say no immediate farm changes but warn that braceros will end January 1 1964 unless policy shifts occur. Partners & Ranchers Labor Association president Dar Whittenberg notes heavy Labor Department regulations cripple the program and praises possible alternatives under the McCarran Act or a domestic worker clearing house, amid ongoing debates.
