Preparations for the Fort Stockton Water Carnival enter a final phase a week before the sixth annual show. A Thursday evening opening features a bathing revue unofficially start a balloting for the Queen of the Water Carnival. Miss Sammie Lee Warnock, the 1940 queen, is noted.
The State Highway Department earmarks 150000 to complete Highway 285 from near Fort Stockton to the Reeves County line, about 20 miles. Plans for drainage and paving follow this week, with a contract hoped for in fall. At present Holland Page Construction Co. is finishing miles of the section.
Mrs. R O Clark aged 42 died Tuesday morning at Monahans hospital after a weeklong illness. Funeral services set for Wednesday in Grovesnor. She formerly lived in Fort Stockton and is survived by her husband two children Jim and Inez Hamlett her mother Mrs Lulu Marrs of Thrifty four sisters and a brother.
The Cemetery Association seeks markers for every unmarked grave at East Hill Cemetery. In June they will contact owners, offering bronze markers at 75 cents each, with erection handled by the association. Committee members include Mrs. F. S. Wilson, Mrs. H. L. Winfield, Mrs. Lem Smith, and Mrs. N. D. Pouncey who will provide information and accept contributions.
Comanche Springs retreat for West Texas Christian Churches became a success with attendance reduced by flooded Pecos River roads. Rev. G. M. Eastman announced that the Comanche Springs Conference will extend as seen on back page SEE NO 6.
About 250 boys from 26 counties gathered in James Rooney Park for the second summer camp of District Six in Fort Stockton. The three day program included grass identification classes and farm and ranch education films, with rifle shooting a popular activity last year.
Ticket sales for the Fort Stockton Water Carnival evening performances on June 13 and 14 show brisk demand with many good seats still available. Mrs. Lee White handles advance sales for the Fort Stockton Business & Professional Women's Club, with the ticket booth at Gallemore Drugs.
Two to three weeks behind schedule due to May rains. Ranchers expect completion by mid month or later. half the work done as daily showers cut work time. Prices for shearers run about 11 cents per head, two to three cents higher than last year. Lamb feeders show interest but few contracts are in place.
Fort Stockton expects crowds next week as regional youth gatherings resume after two events this week. Following the Water Carnival, a district summer camp for home economics students occupies the area, with Christian Church youth and 4 H Club boys attending. The season also features a series of outings including company picnics, the Presbyterian Young People's Conference, Camp Comanche, and a large Texas New Mexico Pipeline Co picnic. The Water Carnival and Permian Basin Firemen’s Association convention, plus a local invitation golf tournament, will draw thousands and keep Fort Stockton crowded through Sunday. Citizens are urged to host visitors and coordinate to accommodate the influx.
Announcement that Pure Oil Company will drill a 6000 foot test of the Delaware sand on Malcolm Almond land 23 miles west of Fort Stockton. Bids are sought for a drilling contract with rotary equipment on a block of 25 sections, near Sec 48, T10 N, 50 Rwy. Co. survey. The 1932 Harrison well lies about 10 miles southeast on a separate structure.
Harold Fortson, lifeguard at Comanche Spring pool, attends the Red Cross national aquatic school near Kerrville. The session runs June 1 to 10 and prepares him to teach water safety at the local pool this summer. The Kerrville program is one of 19 nationwide.
Fort Stockton and Iraan lodges co host a fellowship meeting drawing more than 200 Masons from West Texas. Grand Master Sam B Cantey Jr of the Grand Lodge of Texas will speak after a Fort Stockton chicken barbecue at James Rooney Park. Guest Masons travel from El Paso Sonora and San Angelo with committees handling refreshments entertainment reception and registration.
Leonard Hensley of San Antonio traveled to Fort Stockton on Thursday for business engagements, meeting local contacts and touring facilities.
A Thursday afternoon cloudburst flooded low areas across Block One farms near Fort Stockton five miles north on the Imperial Highway. Water several inches deep covered Roy Glenn farm home and surrounding fields. Damaged hay and grain in shocks threaten substantial loss.
Oil activity shifts in Pecos County with Anderson Prichard Oil to drill two Ordovician tests in the field and a west offset to Crockett. Phillips Petroleum announces a shallow wildcat No 2 Nutt about 23 miles east of Fort Stockton, while Magnolia and Abell field wells probe lower sands with several operations continuing past 5 8 thousand feet.
Hans Briam 69 died Saturday afternoon at his Marfa home after a week of illness. Burial followed Monday in the San Antonio Masonic cemetery beside family. Survived by wife Mrs Briam two daughters Mrs W E Flint of Lovington NM and Mrs N B Chaffin of Marfa and son Willie V Briam of El Paso. A sister Mrs H W Blum of San Antonio. Services were Sunday noon at the First Christian Church of Marfa with relatives in attendance.
Fort Stockton's versatile swimming team, a repeat honors holder at McCamey meets, will enter the contests tomorrow. Planned travelers include Dick Heath, Glenn Heath, Annis Rose Duncan, Amelia Weaver, Jean Nunn, Mignon Rachal, Ida B. Wynn, Wesley Measday, Calvin King, Dudley King, Albert Goram, John Hallford, and Barrett Hallford.
Sepriano Gonzales, 48, was buried Sunday afternoon. He was a laborer killed early Saturday when the pickup he rode in crashed into a culvert 18 miles west of Ozona. Emilio Villareal, 40, of Eagle Pass, suffered facial cuts. Four others in the truck escaped injury.
Fort Stockton hosts the Permian Basin Firemen’s Association convention with Olin Culberson as featured speaker. Sen. H L Winfield welcomes visitors. Frank Williams and Taylor White also participate. Hose races, a Rooney Park barbecue, Water Carnival evening program, and two dances follow the Friday business session.
Fort Stockton firms were asked to list entrants with Miss Nancy Moore chairing the bathing revue committee by Monday for the event set for Thursday night next week. Information on the revue is available from Mrs. C. E. Casbier Mrs. D. S. Beeman or Mrs. A. W. Dunn.
Construction for the aquatic show proceeds with rapid progress. The over water stage is completed enlarged and reshaped to host this year’s Aquacade of Comanche Springs. Seats rise along the canal’s southeast side for the spectacle.
Planning for the Water Carnival Parade advances with many entries secured. Mrs H L Winfield oversees floats and commercial entries and welcomes additional participants. Entries must be ready at the Stockton Hotel by 2 30 p m next Friday.
Crowds have outgrown seating so far, and 1646 choice numbered seats will be provided. The Water Carnival opens with a Friday street parade at 2 30 pm, with assembly at the Stockton Hotel. The University of Texas Water team led by Babe Papich Ken Tarleton and Jane Dillard will attend both days of the show.
Imperial opens its new Methodist church with services on Sunday June 8 for the first time. Reverend J W Riley of Grand Falls led much of the work and supervised construction. The building will host Baptist services on alternate Sundays as a Union Church, a first apart from the historic schoolhouse use. A levee along the Grandfalls Imperial Highway near the Pecos River bridge is under construction.
