The Spring City Golf Club invites an estimated 100 visitors to a two day Invitation Tourney at Rooney Park featuring 18 hole match play in foursomes and novel scoring. A Saturday barbecue and Country Club dance follow, with free swimming at Comanche Springs and entertainments for ladies. The event showcases a welcoming town and diverse family amusements.
Opening the season tonight the band gives its first concert of a summer series at eight. The site lies between the bank and Stockton Pharmacy. Manager Thos B Granger says new pieces are prepared including Victor Herbert Favorites with Gypsy Love Song Italian Street Song and Kiss Me Again. The band is in fine form after a trip to Abilene and invites all to attend.
Judge J. E. Starley of Pecos joins Judge R. H. Gray and Vernon L. Sullivan in Washington to seek Reconstruction Finance Corporation support. No local news on progress. hearings at the national capital will take weeks and embassies must secure a hearing. Optimism remains about obtaining a dam and reservoir.
Mrs. Jamie B. Garner state captain and district manager of the Woodmen Circle will travel May 31 to Omaha Nebraska for a field workers meeting June 5 6 7 and at the society's new headquarters. The program includes open house reception a ritualistic exam June 6 and a two day field workers meeting June 7 and 8. She will meet Mrs. Tressie Goldsticker in Stamford Texas with 18 drill team girls and a bus to Omaha. Afterward they will visit the World's Fair. Garner will be joined by her son Robert M. Garner from Baylor University and Dallas.
Congressman R F E Thomason pushes for one Davis Mountains camp under the Roosevelt reforestation program after a meeting with Colonel Lawrence Westbrook Texas relief chairman. Thomason says the camp will aid recruitment and benefit the district and Westbrook backs the plan. Immediate contact will be made with national relief leaders to speed the project.
Marvin Butz finished runner-up in the Trans-Pecos Tennis singles at Wink Sunday, losing a close final to Gilbert Murray of Pecos whose unorthodox game posed a tough challenge. Louis Bradfield and Jack Rollins also competed but did not win the trophy.
The Ladies of the Woodmen Circle will meet next Tuesday at 3:00 PM at the Community House. The clerk urges every able member to attend. Mrs. Fred Cliett, Clerk.
Stockton Steers defeated Sanderson 11 to 2 in a morning game then crushed at Monahans 17 to 2 in a nine inning runaway. Bob Bennett pitched the morning and afternoon, scattering hits and allowing two runs. The Steers next travel Sunday to Presidio for a celebration and fish fry with a planned sighting trip to Ojinaga Mexico.
The Humble Oil and Refining Company halted a 20 million cubic feet gas flow at White-Baker No. 1 after three weeks of mud and cement work. Gas began at 1700 feet and resisted stopping attempts, with about 20 barrels of oil daily alongside. The well depth is 1712 feet and now ready to resume drilling.
State highway department completes survey between Fort Stockton and Pecos under George Achterburg, trimming the route from 52 to 49 miles. The road will nearly straight line between the cities, crossing Toyah Lake. Reeves County seeks rights of way costing about 1500 dollars. Pecos County file to the County Judge. Completion years away. current road expected to draw more South Texas travel to Carlsbad Cavern.
Bill Weldy survived a serious crash 14 miles east when his truck struck a grader blade then a bridge crushing the load of gasoline. He was extricated and taken to Barrett Hospital where he began recovery and remained confined as of Thursday. Weldy works for Eppenauer Drilling Co and is brother of Mrs. Jim Patty.
Mrs Del Beeman and Mrs Casebier returned Sunday from Comanche and Coleman where they visited relatives. Mr Casebier and Cecil stayed in Coleman to visit Mr Dibrell. Mrs Beeman was joined by Beeman's sister from Comanche who will spend several days here visiting.
Across the river in Crane County two wells draw attention of Pecos County landowners. Gulf Production Co. No. 103 Mc Elroy in section 197 block F drills in lime and anhydrite below 2654 feet. Loffland Brothers No. 1 J. B. Tubbs in section 9 block B-27 P. 8. L. is rigging up for standard tools on their new location.
Charles Everett Hart longtime Fort Stockton postmaster died Sunday afternoon from a cerebral hemorrhage while playing golf at Rooney Memorial Park. He was born January 13 1887 in Brazoria County and served 11 years as postmaster. He moved to Fort Stockton in 1920 after a career as a railroad auditor. He married Edith Rotan in Miles City in 1913. Short services were held at home and the remains sent to Houston for interment beside his mother. He is survived by his wife, his father, three brothers and a sister.
Mrs. Cleve Nunn and her daughter Miss Jean travel to Laredo to visit her sister Dorothy and husband and join Mrs. James Rooney who is visiting there. They expect to return in a few weeks.
The Senate committee approves a bill to appropriate 500000 to repay farmers for fumigation and seed sterilization costs since 1929. Pecos County's share is about 20000, with potential $100000 federal reimbursement to Pecos County cotton growers if secured. Governor reportedly favorable to sign the bill. A Senate adjournment deadline looms as a strong push continues.
A. W. Dunn, city judge, was appointed acting postmaster of the Fort Stockton Post Office by wire from J. W. Burke. He fills the unexpired term of C. E. Hart, whose sudden demise left the office vacant. Dunn is praised as an efficient business man trusted to maintain solid service and integrity.
