At a Pecos County school board meeting, transportation bids for routes 2 3 4 were approved while route 1 bids were rejected. Edith Cooper was elected assistant teacher at the Mexican School replacing Hettye Warnock. Marianna Porter was named Domestic Science teacher, Mildred Lockhart had not accepted. Janitor Perry Stires is preparing the building for opening on Monday Sept 7. Teachers Institute starts Sept 1 in Alpine with Pecos County teachers required to attend.

Geo P Hawthorne dies a pioneer resident of Pecos County
Old residents recall Geo P Hawthorne a longtime Pecos County pioneer who died July 17 in Miami Florida at age 63. He came to San Angelo in 1884 moved to Fort Stockton in 1885 served as Pecos County District and County Clerk and Tex Assessor, later pursued ventures in Sanderson Havana and Cuba before returning to the United States. He died of secondary anemia and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery Miami with Masonic honors.

S S Harris Stockton Lumber Co manager was badly burned when the London Hotel caught fire in San Angelo around 1 30 pm The origin and extent of injuries were not yet known at press time Mrs Virgil Nevill and family returned to town after a summer on a Buenavista farm and she will again run the school cafeteria this season

A L Watson Leases White Ranch in Big Spring Area
Sam White leased 115 sections of ranch land to A L Watson of Big Spring. The lease covers five years and includes 17 000 acres owned by the White ranch and 75 000 acres sub leased. Watson, a longtime Big Spring rancher, moves to the White ranch with 2000 cows. the Women White will stay in Fort Stockton until early fall.

Adams Oil Company erected a 56 foot derrick on section 591 as part of a shallow oil test. Adams No.2 on section 3 progresses. Gulf Production on section 85 drills below 4 000 feet in grey lime. Dixie Oil on section 51 drills below 400 feet. Visitors include Fort Worth officials and World Oil Company reps in Fort Stockton.

George Hillger began this week the construction of a stuccoed adobe drive in filling station to serve travelers. The 24 by 60 foot building will offer auto accessories and on site mechanic service, located east side of Stockton between Third and Fourth, with opening expected about October 1.
