A letter debates midweek closures and the push for a townwide Wednesday half holiday. Clerks fear employer vacillation and potential tax impacts as residents urge orderly council action to resolve the dispute.
Mr. Jas Bell prominent Belly River ranchman dies at Lethbridge hospital after brief illness from pleuro pneumonia following a cold caught during flood delays. Funeral in Macleod attended by Alberta Lodge A F and A M Oddfellows and North West Mounted Police veterans. Bell, ex police and respected rancher, left a lasting community legacy.
The Gazette notes the death of a man described as a devoted husband and father. He leaves a widow and three sons, one of whom attends Upper Canada College. The paper and his friends extend sincere sympathy to those afflicted.
The Fernie relief effort aids over 100 families left destitute by husbands and fathers' deaths. Macleod has a history of aiding the needy and calls for quick subscriptions, with funds to be sent to the Fernie branch of the Canadian Bank of Commerce. This week's donations include $11 from the collection at the Methodist church and $5 from Rev. J. A. Jaffray.
The flood cut the C E Ry Old Man's River span, isolating Macleod. Attempts to cross by boat failed, a cable from Piegan Reserve is planned, mail and rail service disrupted, and widespread property and cattle losses reported including dogies and cattle in brush. Rescue parties aided distressed families.
Civil War veteran M. M. Austin of Winchester Indiana writes of his wife’s long illness ending in cure after using Dr King’s New Life Pills. He claims the pills always work and urges others to try them at 25 cents a bottle from R B Barnes drug store.
A new amateur dramatic club has been formed at Pincher Creek with C. H. Lake and A. C. Kemmis leading. It is expected that good plays will be staged later.
Reported trouble in Fernie follows a coal mine explosion that killed miners. A provincial police remark angered locals, leading to demands for the officer to leave town. The mines had been condemned by a Government Inspector who was later dismissed, fueling ongoing tensions.
A massive explosion at Coal Creek Nos 2 and 3 mines near Fernie BC killed between 125 and 150 workers, with about 90 in No 2 perishing. Rescue efforts endured for hours as air overcasts failed and gas hampered efforts, while several rescuers survived thanks to brave acts led by True Wetherby and others.
Report describes English speaking miners remaining to help rescue workers at Fernie. Foreman Graham is singled out for his leadership as rescuers pull out about thirty one men by six o clock. Mothers and wives search the shafts in scenes of despair.

The product is promoted as guaranteed for coughs colds and all lung ailments priced 60 cents and one dollar with free trial bottles at R B Barnes' drug store.
Mrs Geo McFarquhar returns from Lethbridge while J W Wooster opens a new shop. A Monday concert dance was canceled after news of Mr Jas Bell's death. Brackmen Ker of Edmonton secures 5000 tons of oats for the Imperial remount from Seattle. Imperial remounts expect arrival May 30. Colonel Dent stays in Montreal. Major Gore and others to arrive May 30. W D T Jones loses a river wreck near Fort la Corne but salvages most cargo. $260 lost from $2,500 value.
