Between May 31 and June 19 a record 250 convalescents were discharged via the C D D route. Board expansions and overtime have boosted capacity since May, with 152 discharged in four days earlier. Many names listed as discharged from the detachment, as officials await Washington orders on line 26. The system’s efficiency aims to speed releases and free duty personnel.
In a chaotic scene at a Red Cross House show, three Dennis Sisters tricked several nurses into believing a German prisoner warded in Ward 13 could speak, prompting a prank that exposed the man to danger and a nurse to injury while pages of mischief and wartime bravado unfolded.
Lieut Ralph L Owens, formerly morale officer, was appointed last week as business manager of the Fort Des Moines Post, succeeding Lieut R H Tinger whose workload proved heavy. Owens is a seasoned newspaper man and the post expects his leadership to benefit the paper's operations.
A panorama of the fort's personnel was captured on parade ground last Tuesday morning. Central figures include Colonel Juenemann commanding officer Major Hofman Major Sharpe Biss Kettie McMillan chief nurse and Miss Louise Cadwalder chief aide. Front row was officers with non commissioned officers behind them and nurses and aides clustered center and sides with detachment men and patients.
Dr Matt R Sawyers secretary of the A C A left for Chicago for a conference and a letter reached the local Y to say he was assigned to U S General Hospital No 36 Detroit to organize the staff of the new building and take charge. He has served at this station for about seven to eight months promoting the best interests of the work.
Reginald A. Ellis, once a detachment member now at Base Hospital No 104 Camp Budge then overseas, visited the fort Tuesday using Gee Mr in place of Private. Ellis, famed as a Des Moines singer, sang for the troops in Ward ? in the afternoon he arrived in the city last Saturday.
A nine pound baby boy was born to Mrs James Sullivan wife of Sgt James Sullivan mess sergeant here in Ward Yast Monday evening at 10 45. Sully is said to be extremely happy and his smile grows with the news.
A week ago yesterday the W. C. T. U. Flower Mission Day was observed with every hospital patient receiving a bouquet. Mrs. Hattie Bly, chairwoman of the Flower Mission Committee, presided as the "Fairy Godmother of ’26."
Nathan and Myron Gordon of Stratton Nebraska, nephews of Mother Carlton, were guests at the fort last Saturday. Both men are discharged soldiers and part of the feature activities. Lieut Col A T Cooper, former commanding officer, now heads the Mation to which Dr Sawyer was moved. RC Tindall, arriving from Camp Dodge, will replace him and lead duties with army Y work.
A Fort football field baseball game ended in a 2-0 victory for the Herring Motors over the Soldiers. Revie Sweet struck out six, allowed four hits, with Robinson and Westover contributing two runs via key plays. Despite chances in the third and ninth, the Soldiers could not cross the plate as costly errors and missed hits halted rallies.
Fort Ball team routed Camp Grant Base Hospital 12 to 0 on the parade ground Wednesday. Superb pitching by Revie Sweet allowed three hits. Fort Ball totaled ten hits with strong defense and seven Camp Grant errors aiding the blowout. Westover and Carlson doubled twice, Munson led in hits, Bentzen's one handed grab saved a likely extra base hit, and Fort Ball added decisive runs in the first inning and beyond as they prepare for Fort Snelling.
Loyd BF. Frazier of Medical Detachment 353rd Infantry died at Base 116 in Bazailles France. No further information about his death has been obtained. Soldiers with knowledge are asked to contact his mother Mrs. J. M. Frazier in Des Moines Iowa.
Two or three new Red Cross men are due at the fort for Red Cross work. Field director Leo McCarthy said he expects arrivals before July 1. Two may be assigned to recreational work and the third to hospital duties.
The Red Cross hosted four motion picture shows last Friday evening at the station. The films depicted patient experiences from two weeks ago. The Sims were exceptionally clear and the audience showed intense interest.
Red Cross unit welcomed 115 aides and nurses to a Meatre era party at the Orpheum Friday afternoon and evening. Night nurses attended the matinee while day nurses handled the evening performance. After the show, guests were invited to a special patients meet film at the Red Cross house.
Movies held sway at the Red Cross house Wednesday and Friday evenings. Venus In The East featuring Bryant Washburn showed Wednesday and W S Hart in Breed of Men was the Friday attraction. Thursday night was mixer night. One hundred youths from the War Camp Community Service attended the fort for the entertainment.
The baseball games between psycopath ic patients from Wards C and D, supervised by Red Cross men C. B. Baatats and Oo Murlagh, have been a real success. Participants show great interest in the games and the physical and mental results have been very pleasing according to the directors.
J W B presents seven vaudeville acts at the Red Cross House last Monday evening under Tsadore Somsheim. The fort audience enjoyed a varied program from reading to chaotic dancing with performances by Mrs. Sam Schloss, Bird and Kemper, Rose Scalise dancer, Ermine pianist, Ruston Orchestra with five girls, Folly Dancers including Rose Lorenz and Gertrude Nugest Abjth Nye and Dotis Andraim Jacobsen.
