A $69 million Forest Park bulk mail center near Chicago processes 200 trucks daily and uses a multi belt sorting system to move parcels to 21 centers nationwide. Opened in April, it covers 53 acres with a 520,000 square foot main building and aims for full capacity this fall.
Forest Park library officials announce a $100 gift from the Eagles auxiliary to fund books or senior citizens reading aids. Librarian Cleis Jensen notes possible use for a reading magnifier and large print books, with other gifts and local history records also mentioned.
Virgil Lattimore, labor relations supervisor, says exams, not race, determine who gets special skills jobs at Chicago's Bulk Mail center in Forest Park. About 850 workers here, with 75 percent from transfers, and recruitment efforts include inviting black students and suburban housing support.
Forest Park creates a historical society approved by the Bicentennial commission executive committee. Dr. Frank J. Orland chairs the project and a museum will open in the library basement featuring artifacts, documents, and paintings with plans for a constitution by-laws and tax exempt status.
Forest Park police arrested Phillip Marcadantes of Chicago for burglarizing Rierson Drugs at 7328 Madison Ave. He entered through a roof, dropped via a vent shaft, and broke a ceiling before triggering the alarm. Officers found 65 bottles of barbiturates and amphetamines valued around 1950 with 270 in cash.
