The Oak Park Police Department launches a pilot motorcycle patrol in the Team Two area to test advantages over foot and auto patrol in a high crime district. Three new Honda motorcycles, bought by the village in May, will be used for general patrols.
A Sunday thunder storm in Oak Park caused minor damage in the Day in Our Village area. Two to three trees fell or lost limbs, one struck a house chimney. Police Lt. William Peaslee noted Team Two patrols using two motorcycles began last fall to address crime in the east end.
Eight area residents in Illinois 18th district will receive one year scholarships covering tuition for state colleges and universities. Winners were chosen by a nonpartisan Legislative Scholarship Committee led by Rep. Robert K. Downs from over 40 applicants based on academics civic involvement and financial need.
Oak Park resident Mary McMenamin, a Tri ton College needlepoint teacher and Creative Needlers of Oak Park member, spent three weeks teaching needlepoint in California. She conducted workshops in Carmel San Mateo and Mill Valley and judged a Pebble Beach needlework exhibit. She is certified by the National Standards Embroiderers to teach needlepoint.
