The Postal Service launches a public service campaign urging use of Zip Codes to speed sorting and cut costs. Officials estimate $25 million yearly is spent on mail without Zip Codes and a 1 percent national increase could save about $4 million annually. The system handles about 90 billion pieces yearly and machines sort most faster than manual methods. Zip Codes have been voluntary since 1963 and now appear on about 1 percent of first class mail.
