The Queer of the Prairie operated as a canal boat or packet on a 24 hour schedule from Chicago to Peniont on the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1850. The first stage line from Chicago to Ottawa was inaugurated in 1834, started by a line owned by Dr. Emple.
The author recounts a 24 day journey covering 6699 miles by train from Oxnard to Chicago, via Santa Barbara Portland Seattle and Vancouver, then southwest to Oregon and into British Columbia. He notes cities, scenery, and rail details, with reflections on San Francisco Oakland Berkeley Portland Seattle and Vancouver, and remarks on Oregon and Washington populations and landscapes.
