Government Renames Hospital at Speedway

The government renames the hospital at Speedway to Ed ward I ines Jr Memorial Hos pital honoring Lieutenant Edward Hines Jr a Yale graduate and World War I hero who died in France in 1918. The ceremony will occur on Sunday afternoon with dignitaries including Marshal Ferdinand Foeh and the American Legion executive committee in attendance. The hospital, with 1000 beds, cost over 6.3 million and was largely funded by Congress and private donations. A memorial avenue of trees will be planted on Armistice Day. A recreation building contract was awarded for 60,240 to Charles H. Johnson & Son of Chicago.

The American Legion West Post planted a Great American tree outside Speedway Hospital in memory of Theodore Roosevelt. Leaders including Judge Landis Major General George Bell, and Commander MacCauley spoke of Roosevelt as a soldier and exemplar. Attendees urged perseverance for wounded servicemen as a wreath and laurel were laid.

Wilhelmina Henrietta Winter of Forest Dark died October 25 at her son Merman Winter’s home at 297 High Avenue aged 89 years 11 months 18 days. Born in Patelover Germany November 0 1881 she came to America in 1644 and settled in Forestork. She was wife of Carl Winter who died 44 years ago and mother of two sons Fred and Herman and three daughters Mrs Bertha Witt Mrs Ida Kottke and Mrs Anna King. Funeral at her son’s home 229 Elgin Avenue then St Paul’s Lutheran Church officiated by Rev W G Wenninger. Survived by 18 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
