Proviso East Girls League Prowls For Canned Goods

The Proviso East High School Girls League plans a canned goods drive Friday Oct 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. Needy families will receive gifts on Christmas Eve distributed by local posts and groups. About 50 to 60 students join the effort with Rita Moreno as faculty sponsor.

Nisei Drum Corps Enjoys A Successful Season

The Forest Park Nisei Ambassadors Drum Corps sponsored by VFW Post 7141 completed a standout year with an Eastern trip lasting ten days. They placed 5th at the Kingsman Show in New York, 2nd at the Black Watch Show in Willingboro New Jersey, then won the Ocean City Invitationals in New Jersey.

New Skipper Leads Naval Reserve Training Center in Forest Park

Cant. Max P. Halley assumes command of the Naval Reserve Training Center at 7410 W Roosevelt, succeeding Cmdr. John D. Pratt as the 8th naval officer to lead the facility since 1955. The center trains about 400 reservists in the Chicagoland area to advance promotion readiness and mobilization manpower. Capt. Bailey, a naval aviator with service dating to 1938, becomes senior officer with a background including patrol and early warning commands and service on the Joint Chiefs of Staff Statistics Division. He and wife Norine have four sons, one nearing graduation at the Naval Academy.

Council Explains Need for Police Protection Tax

A community information meeting outlined the Police Protection Tax to be voted in the upcoming election. Mayor Earl Witt and Commissioners explained replacing an antiquated system, modern equipment, more officers, and higher pay to meet national standards. The tax would add 75 cents per month to the average bill.
