A Harlem State Bank audit traced $10,000 missing after a dramatic pre dawn robbery attempt. Five men stormed the Huxholds home and bank, forcing entry and taking hostages before the time lock prevented vault entry. Bank staff and janitors were briefly detained as investigators pursued leads with few solid descriptions.
The Lutheran Publicity Association of Chicago arranged two radio series for the 1927 1928 season inviting soloists quartets and choruses. Opening honors go to St Johns Male Chorus a 50 member group praised by Chicago Tribune critics. Members and officers are listed with director L Lueker and accompanist Guemmer among others.
The Forest Park Chamber of Commerce board met at 742 Bacign Street to approve routine business and plan a general meeting at Legion Hall on Friday evening November 25. A nominating committee will be chosen then and a $ kreewar election is slated for December. Membership drive and changes in dues were discussed for the November session.
Jack Hermanson formerly of the Forest Park police force will spend the winter in town after leaving Sportsman’s Paradise on Eagle River. He and a partner own a 180 acre resort with two fishing lakes capable of hosting 100 guests during buoy season. Detectives and fingerprint experts investigated a bank robbery. prints blurred prevented a clear image and bank officials offered no theories.
The village council passed a resolution Monday night authorizing issuing up to 30000 in warrants to cover running expenses. Commissioner Lange introduced and the measure was unanimously adopted. Two bonds were presented and one approved. A Red Cross drive permit for November 11 and Thanksgiving Day was authorized. Trailers project updates and a delay after a Wis plant trip were reported. Brannon advised detaining the trailers overnight to avoid unsafe night travel. Sale of two horses and five wagons was approved for disposal.
Aquilla Gibbs Digrell of the U S Navy spoke at the Kiwanis meeting in uniform about the ship Old Ironsides and the ongoing effort to raise funds for its repair. He noted repeated rescues when funds were unavailable and said the vessel, in dry dock at Boston, needs money and a touring lithograph sale funds the cause. Mrs Grace Schwerin, leading the Chicago and state drive, also attended and described plans to preserve the ship as a patriotism education tool and public lesson.
Madison Street boosts plan to place a fifty three foot wide advertising sign from Judge Murray's office to the vacant lot. The project would create revenue for a tree shaded parking space and allows seven of fourteen spaces for monthly ten dollar rents. The committee proposed to fund lumber and erection with sign revenues and seeks council approval despite an existing ordinance against billboards.
Harold Newman's basket sealed a 71 to 20 win for the St. Johan A. A. Hornets over the St. Stephen basketball team at the St. John gym. The St John A. A. Rangers beat the St. Stephen lightweights 14 to 8 in the curtain raiser, their first game of the season. The Hornets overcome a late South Siders lead and, with Henning contributing seven baskets for Englewood, secured Forest Parkers' third victory. The lightweights were held to three baskets by Marvin Krueger and Art Triebes. Next, Hornets and Rangers face Jehovah teams at St. John gym.
The Red Cross drive in Forest Park opened yesterday Armistice Day and will run through Thanksgiving. Mrs. W. C. Hosler supervises, with help from American Legion auxiliary members including Mesdames Feng, Pochert, Hansen, Sells, McEvoy, Kozick, Sn, Hosters, Goodman, Shepherd, Pagtan, Kozick Jr, and H. Rausch. A tag day occurred Armistice Day and enrollment continues to Thanksgiving Day. Forest Park Legion auxiliary notes faithful aid at Speedway hospital with Red Cross in therapy and constructive work. President Coolidge urges renewal of Red Cross membership, reaffirming its wartime and peacetime value.
Madison Street merchants stage a four day pre Thanksgiving sale from November 19 to the evening of Thanksgiving week. Backed by the Madison Street Boosters the event invites locals and visitors to shop in Forest Park for edibles apparel and home goods with special attractions and decorated streets. Further plans will appear in next week's Review.
Madison Street boosters held two large meetings in two weeks to tackle street parking and boost business. The parking plan proposed using three lots east of Peasley’s store, across from Snow Bros, and the Judge Murray corner lot, with a report to follow. A pre-Thanksgiving sale and measures to attract shoppers were debated, while two local businesswomen and notable guests attended the Tuesday session.
An appreciative crowd gathered at Proviso High School Auditorium on Tuesday as Ozark Ripley spoke under the Forest Park Walton League banner. Ripley said audiences usually compliment speakers, but here he thanked them for their evident appreciation of his tales and wildlife pictures of America.
Funeral services for Albert J. Weith age 77 will be held Saturday at 2 30 PM from Blatter chapel. He died Tuesday evening November 6 at his son William s home 907 Massasou nue Chicago. Interment Concordia cemetery. Survived by three children Meta Mueller William and Leo all in Chicago.
West Suburban Arrows dominated West Lakes in a Sunday game, winning 11 to 0. Stakey and Gustopher led the Arrows with key runs and a 40 yard pass play, while several drives stalled by fumbles and defensive holds.
Farhold committee member leads five men to supervise Chicago German singers and Vicinity performers touring Germany for the Saengerfest in Vienna July 20 to 23. They sail from New York on the Henry, visit Decesden Nurnberg Vienna Stuttgart Cologne Wiesbaden Frankfurt Heidelberg. Berhold serves as tour finance secretary with plans for extended Germany visit. Forest Park residents may join via Berhold for details.
The district plans to open an additional room at Betsy Rosa to ease crowding. First grade has 48 pupils at Stevenson and will be split to create space. Grant has 324 pupils in eight rooms with hall sessions for the lowest grades, Garfield also hosts hall sessions though its growth lags Grant. Overall about 75 more pupils are enrolled than last year, bringing total attendance to around 1,400.
Armistice Day was marked in Forest Park with staged displays and closing of banks and public buildings though no public celebration by the Legion due to the holiday not being universally observed. The Legion plans an Armistice Day dance at Legion headquarters Saturday night. Wreaths and fresh flags were placed on the graves of about 28 Forest Park veterans buried in eight cemeteries, including Elmhurst.
Elmer Arch, village attorney, will address the Farcer Sartal club members at their club rooms on Harrison Street and Melo Avenue Saturday evening, November 19. The meeting includes a social hour and entertainment.
Lande Brothers unveil a complete department store at 9 a m Saturday with main and bargain basement stock. New departments include drugs sundries dress items ladies coats infant wear and millinery alongside a men and children's department and a boys workwear section in the basement. The store features a separate basement service and a metropolitan storefront display prepared by window dresser Mred Wo Rische amid plans for a car parade that was canceled due to Armistice Day.
The Walton League of America Forest Park chapter announces a rapid expansion to include more members and wider activities. President Dr J Warner says the move aims to meet rising outdoor recreation demands with intensified conservation efforts and a broadened program.
