School Board Meets Scrutinized By 50 Citizens

Fifty local citizens gathered at Forest Park school board to press for tighter oversight of proceedings. President William Kramer announced monthly meetings at 8:15. Mrs. Wassmundt urged reading prior minutes. questions on teacher hiring and superintendent correspondence arose but were unresolved.

C C Turns Down Fare Hike Request

The Illinois Commerce Commission this week denied Chicago and West Towns Railways rehearing on an order granting part of its fare increases. The commission had approved 17 cent adult fares and denied 8 cent children and student fares, and eliminated a 3 cent transfer charge. The line sought 20 cent adult and 13 cent children fares, with a net operating revenue of $100,000 from 17 cents.

Whitehall Victim Suffers Confidence Game Loss

The cashier at Whitehall Service Station on Harlem Street was targeted in a confidence racket. A man asked for two $10 bills for 20 singles, left with the envelope after counting, and fled when he failed to return. The envelope contained blank paper instead of money. The victim alerted police and is praised for reporting the incident.

Mrs Earl Witt of 245 Elgin will host a tea Sunday November 6 in the Social Room at Proviso High School from 3:30 to 4 as the Maywood Arts Club opens its annual art exhibit.

Touchdown Star of Bears-49ers Game

Bill Wightkin of the Chicago Bears scored two touchdowns in a Sunday victory over the San Francisco 49ers on the West Coast. He caught a 19 yard pass from Bob Williams at the 11 yard line and later scored on a toss from Steve Romanik. The 240 pound Notre Dame alum and former arrival with his wife last September marked the season’s first two touchdowns.

Dept Fought 49 Fires in October

The Forest Park Fire Department answered 49 calls in October and warns that the dry spell could push November totals higher. Most fires were carelessness related, with rubbish piles and dry lawns burning from discarded cigarettes. Halloween Eve brought eight calls and yesterday a portion of the Des Plaines L platform and surrounding area burned from a cigarette.

Proviso Township Teachers Institute Hold Two Sessions

Public schools close Monday and Tuesday for the Proviso Township Teachers Institute. District 91 meets at Field-Stevenson School at 9 a.m. Dr Ruth Strickland of Indiana University leads a Language Arts conference. An afternoon session at Proviso Township High School features Dr David Mc Farland on Teaching is Fun.

Dick Walker Leads NU Blood Drive Campaign

Dick Walker son of Mr and Mrs Claude Walker of 145 Elgin led Northwestern University blood drive this year His committee spurred fraternity and sorority participation gathered pledges arranged publicity pictures and collected over 1000 pints of blood during the three day drive.

Rent Payment Incident Involving Dog Bite At Elm Street

Nine year old Francis Rock of 837 Elgin was bitten by the landlord's dog Monday as she went to pay the rent. The injury prompted medical attention and is under observation by local authorities.

Forest Park votes Ike landslide in local election record

Citizens in Forest Park cast 5850 votes for Dwight Eisenhower and 2373 for Adlai Stevenson, the largest local total for any candidate. Republicans also swept the ticket with 4741 straight votes to 1789 for Democrats, while Proviso Township reported 56,114 votes with 20,920 straight Republican ballots and 15,122 Democratic straights.

Chamber urges visit to local public schools affair

Forest Park Chamber of Commerce calls on citizens and business leaders to join a school visit next Wednesday November 12. The groups will meet at 1 15 PM at Grant White auditorium and end with a dinner dance at Elmhurst Country Club at 6 30 PM.

Robbery at Silver Service Station on Harlem

A man entered the Silver Service Station at 949 Harlem on October 29 and robbed the attendant of 22 dollars after greeting him. He then restrained the attendant in the washroom and fled the scene.
