Forest Social club will seek a dedicated duty house by year end, with site near Harrison and Beloit under review. The executive committee will consider a near location while the club grows from about 10 members to nearly 200 plus a women's auxiliary, and a headquarters with a kitchen and piano.
Tony Romain, 84, longtime Forest Park resident and pioneer Italian, died Saturday after weeks of illness. He arrived as one of the first Italians, later employed by the village for twelve years as a street cleaner. Survived by wife, son Charles, daughter Mrs. Mary Papa, ten grandchildren. a son Joseph died two years ago. Funeral held at St. Hernadine’s with mayor and village officials among pallbearers. procession passed through Madison and Des Plaines avenues.
Thalman, principal of Proviso Township High School for a decade, resigned to take effect August 11 due to ill health. He had improved the school’s standing since joining from Oak Park High, but no successor has been named. The board did not provide details beyond a formal statement issued by the principal’s office.
Dr Frankel suffered several broken ribs and numerous bruises after an auto collision on Washington Boulevard near Parkside Avenue. He avoided a worse outcome when a quick turn avoided a parked car, but the head on crash with a westbound Ford sedan wrecked both vehicles. The Ford driver E C Flynn of De Plains was unhurt.
The West Towns Railway starts a new hourly bus service along Harlem and Roosevelt from Grand to Twenty-second Street via Park, Division, Thatcher, and Lake Street. Transfers available to streetcars. West Towns plans extend service as demand grows. shuttle train between Twelfth and Twenty-second to be reconsidered. Permission granted by Milnes State Commerce Commission. service began Monday and will run hourly until 10 pm, with future expansion possible.
The Roosevelt Road Civic association elected officers at its Wednesday night meeting in the Roosevelt State bank. Officers are President Edwin Schrieder Vice President Joseph Unger Secretary Milton Beadus Treasurer Charles Tredar. The group aims to promote Roosevelt road business and property interests and to share ideas on local matters. A six member committee was appointed to push widening Roosevelt road. Committee: Theodore Lobstein William Gardner Joseph Bristow Salvator Sansone Samuel Oswoth James Charvat. Board of Directors: Charles Eck George Hill James Charvat Allen Gardner Louis Oswald Salvator Sansot.
Local excitement grows as Harlem eyes converting the old Marlen Golf Club on Onevelt Road into a race track. Proposals circulate to clear sod and revive the famed Chicago era track while keeping the golf house open for business and residence use.
Wilhelm Hess, 924 Circle Avenue, collapsed and died in his shop after an evening at home with family. Born in Germany, he moved to Forest Park in 1912 and is survived by wife, daughter, and several siblings. Funeral services are set for Mintters Chapel Saturday at 2:40 PM with Harlem Masonerchor to sing. cremation to follow. Hess was a butcher by trade, an outdoors lover, and an amateur painter whose passing follows news of storm-damaged trees on his property.
Pastor Marcus Wagner of St John’s Lutheran is on a four week vacation visiting his daughter Esther Stearns in Columbia Missouri. He plans time in the Ozark mountains before resuming duties. His son and daughter in law Walter Packatt and family toured Detroit visiting Mrs Beekat and Mrs Feed Schwass, returning Thursday.
A tub being unloaded at a worksite dropped and injured August Cut, breaking his ankle and toes. Two Nie loan items were trashed. He was taken to a hospital and expected to rest for a month. Mr. Cutrard was nearby as the tub slipped from handlers.
The new village council met Monday night to a packed audience with no empty seats as routine business opened. The lighting ordinance on Madison street received its first reading, the American Legion gained fireworks stands funding for the Fourth of July, and permits were issued for a gasoline filling station and auto laundry at Harlem and Randolph amid nearby property owner support.
The United Pleasure club has obtained a building permit for a club room on Wilcox and Desplainegs across from the village hall. The two story clubhouse, costing about 30000 dollars, will feature Italian architecture with an assembly room and kitchen on the second floor and club rooms plus athletic facilities on the first. The club committee includes Mike Chinda Gu Geliedi Mortis Battaglia and Frank Orarato, with most Italian members living in Forest Park and others from nearby suburbs.
Forest Park hosts Poppy Day on May 27 under American Legion Auxiliary Forest Park Post, led by Mrs Harold Levy. Volunteers patrol streets and man elevated stations to boost Forest Park's poppy quota while funds support local relief and hospital workers making the poppies.
Kiwanis Club will hold Memorial Day services at the Village Hall monument with plans for a Legion speaker and a Kiwanis speaker. President Fred W. Licht formed committees including Henry Rieck Fred Becker Arthur Wiedeman Dr T. Warner and Irving Thoendel to organize arrangements.
Memorial services by Forest Park Post 414 and Columbia Post at Forest Hume Cemetery Sunday at 2 30 with speakers Senator Charles OS Denoen Dr Hradtzey Bresten and Judge Harry J Fisher. Participating groups include St Bernard Commandery K P Spanish War Veterans Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The program features drums bugle corps band and a wreath presentation.
Proviso High School observes its third annual Girls Week from May 23 to 27 featuring a Father Daughter Banquet led by Vivian Bergstrom and O A Rew, a morning assembly with Louise Garnett Ayere, a May Fete athletic display, and a Mothers and daughters supper in the cafeteria.
The Wilhelmi Boosters dropped their first game last Sunday in a ten inning contest, 7 to 0, showing lack of practice. They host the Packetts this Sunday at 3 p.m. in new white uniforms with black trim, if the suits arrive.
Joseph Reeds, who runs a restaurant near Madison, is building a horse shoe court in the rear of his place. The new court will have forty foot apart pitching lanes with frames and nets, and will open soon for regular play and relays.
