Forest Park voters head to the polls next Tuesday with no firm choice, while bookmakers note bets on mayoral and commissioner candidates. The city conducts a low key campaign under silent ballots as residents weigh personal ties and local influence amid rumors of outside money.
Proclamation to citizens announces the upcoming primary election next Tuesday in March for mayor, commissioners, and police magistrate. Urges voters to exercise rights, elect honest candidates, and not stay home, stressing the importance of the local vote.
Dr E Frankel and Elsie Janis headlined a large Legion Party at Ute Palace Theatre in Chicago. After the show the gathering moved to Cher Pierre for a midnight supper with dancing and a surprise appearance by Dr Frankel escorting Janis and her mother to the Congress Hotel. Souvenirs included candy boxes and corkscrews, and the event lasted until 3 am.
The village school relief committee met in the village hall on Tuesday and adjourned for two weeks. Ernest H. Witt will lead a committee to draft a letter to accompany personal tax schedules explaining school needs and relief plans and urging filing. Supt. Mueller discussed bills to expand bonding power for districts and noted Harvey schools may close April 27 for lack of funds. Kiwanis Club supports universal personal property tax payments to aid schools.
Mr and Mrs Henry Gosch of Elgin Avenue and family joined Mr and Mrs Henry Taylor of Forest Park at the Gosch cottage on Pistakee Leake for a day of ice fishing. They bagged two pickerel weighing five and seven pounds each and a three pound black bass. Ma and Mrs Tom Murray and son joined in the afternoon for a pleasant time on the ice. Later Mr and Mrs Jini had a fish dinner at their Forest Park home.
In a southern village area a four-person group announced themselves for the mayoral race at a first meeting. The next evening an observer heard the same group present a second candidate at a northern meeting. The judges discuss the police race as orderly. Voters will choose one of two candidates, Henry 5 or Schupracher Paul R, with each vote signaling potential election results.
Forest Park officials weighed permit for Frank Konietzko to enlarge Forest Park Iron Works at 329 Burkhardt Court. Brisch supports approval citing small operations and neighbor proximity concerns, while Mayor Kaul and others hesitate. A personal inspection is planned before next meeting amid lively public input.
Eighteen representatives of Forest Park industries and members of the Industrial committee of Forest Park Chamber of Commerce met at a Monday luncheon at Paradise Inn in the Capital building. They agreed to hold regular meetings to discuss mutual problems, with the first Mayday in April session planned. Irving F. Witt chaired the meeting.
The Forest Social club met Tuesday night with little drama and offered free cigars coffee and hot dogs. A March 29 social event and a plan for a permanent home were discussed led by President Herman Stolzenfeldt. The club aims to locate near Harrison Street and fit the space for club use.
Forest Park Women’s club stages a Friday art exhibition and tea in the Municipal Building. The all day event featured school garden poster prizes, a Washington-inspired performance, talks on art by Miss Withkelesmna Marth, and diverse loaned objets d art from local residents. Awards went to Garfield school pupils, with exhibits ranging from Indian carvings to American pottery and fine etchings, attracting many attendees.
Lillian Gemkow, second grade pupil at Betsy Ross School, found a robin in Forest Park and won a bird house from Exy-Kling Garden Furniture Co. She told her mother, crumbs lured the robin close, and she hopes the bird will attract a mate to nest in the house. The discovery coincided with River Forest’s own first robin that day.
Kiwanis club meeting featured Emil L. Buechler praised for piano work as Fiery C. Rieck delivered the presentation. The group adopted resolutions backing a plan for personal taxes to fund school relief, while honoring Proviso students excelling in sports and academics.
The village census by the police shows approximate totals: about 6,000 residents south of the Metropolitan tracks and about 4,000 north of Madison. The central district between Madison streets and the tracks is not yet estimated, but dense buildings suggest totals near 5,000, with the village likely under classification. City salaries for mayor and clerk are noted as allowed.
The Forest Park tax rate drops to 12.64 this year from 12.88 last year, with reductions mainly in state and high school taxes. Bridges roads and township taxes are only a few cents higher, while Sanitary District and Forest Preserves cuts largely offset the decreases. The Forest Park School district raises 2 cents, aided by a reduced school bond levy and related interest and sinking funds.
Collector Langguth sent personal property tax bills while real estate bills will be delayed. Protests focus on people who did not file schedules and saw doubled taxes. A woman and daughter contested $15 furniture but trucks were tied in with the schedule. Other cases included a $9 tax dispute and a $3 to $0 plea, with the assessor noting protests must be raised at filing or review. The volume of calls surged as bills went out.
Elsie Tonkin launches a spr inal opening of her new millinery shop at 7405 Madison Street on Saturday offering a complete line of the latest styles. Mrs Corrie Tonkin assists in the store as an inducement with gifts and special fixtures promised for the opening.
Arthur Scott Kelleg, memory expert, and his wife addressed the Kiwanis club and will speak Friday afternoon March 1 before Forest Park. A large crowd is expected as the event promises to be a notable attraction.
