Postmaster Bill Schleman reports a large turnout for Postal Service Day in Forest Park. Over 2000 souvenir envelopes and 5000 USPS stamps were distributed and sold, with hundreds touring the facilities.
Senate sponsor Howard R Mohr discusses the potential constitutional issues facing Illinois parochiaid and bingo legalization. He notes bingo could fund church supported schools if civil challenges shut down aid, citing past estimates of funds to Catholic organizations and safeguards to limit church state entanglement.
Dea Provenzano of Maywood has been appointed Proviso Township Clerk by the Board of Auditors. He has long served in local and township roles including Maywood Recreation Board and Proviso Township Collector. Provenzano now begins his first term as Chairman of the Proviso Township Republican Organization Board of Directors. He and his wife Alberta live at 2109 South 10th Avenue with two children, Donald Mark and Grace Cox.
A special film program titled Dead of Night will be shown July 24 as part of the Wednesday film series at Forest Park Public Library. The program features stories of the macabre with actors Michael Redgrave Antony Baird Sally Howes Basil Radford Ralph Michael and Frederick Walk. Sponsored by Friends of the Library the event is free and open to the public.
The Forest Park Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual golf outing at Adian Lakes Country Club Bloomingdale. Prizes include low net low gross and traveling trophies. Dinner at the country club follows with prize awards. Tickets from Homer’s Restaurant or committee members.
An estimated crowd of four to six thousand attended the 2nd Annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Day at the park. Concession stands thrived while a rain softened but didn’t spoil a big fireworks finale. The Police and Fire Departments baseball team defeated Park District Nine 10 to 5 in the first inning featured unearned runs. Water fights tug of war hourly from 3 pm provided extra fun. The F.O.P. Grease Pole climb saw a pants loss but drew attention. Everyone looks forward to next year.
William Banta 1002 Circle suffered severe second and third degree burns to arms legs head and torso when a flammable liquid ignited as he plugged in a phono graph through a basement window. Thomas Lowry helped, Earl Yearling aided moving him before ambulance and fire units arrived. Banta in critical condition at Loyola Hospital ICU.
