Chicago and environs faced an extreme winter bout surpassing 64 years of records. Cold wave began with mud and snow, halting traffic on rural highways and stressing heating in homes and vehicles. Temperatures hovered at dangerously low levels with limited relief and ongoing disruption through the week.
