Mile a Minute play to be presented Friday by local club

A local Womans Club production titled Mile a Minute will be staged Friday at 8 15 pm in the school auditorium. The cast includes Dick Minish as conductors, Joe Hamrick as an English tourist, Mrs Hague Padgett as Priscilla Lancaster and Mikie Hewitt as Jacob Pretzelstein with a chorus of bridesmaids pirates farmerettes college girls and a cabaret scene. The sketch features a mix of comic and musical numbers and is promoted as an entertaining evening of community talent.

Joint Meeting of W M U and Aid Society

The regular joint meeting of the W. M. U. and Ladies Aid Society will be held next Wednesday afternoon July 4 at 3 oclock at the church. Refreshments will be served by the Young Matrons Circle. Members should attend or notify Mrs. Fred Webb by Tuesday morning.

Dorsey Heads to Mobile to Identify Killer Suspect

M E Dorsey left for Mobile Alabama to identify a man held there as James Murphy who is accused of killing Shelby Police Chief Shelton Jones twenty seven years ago. Murphy allegedly resembles Jim Lowery, the fugitive. Shelby officials pursue extradition as lawyers contest proceedings.

Mrs George Oates Dies in Grover

Mrs George Oates died at her Grover home Sunday afternoon after a several week illness. She is survived by husband Dr George Oates and son T F Oates of Rutherfordton. A son Dr Clyde Oates died last year. Supported by many Goode siblings and spouses. Service held at Grover home, burial in Rutherfordton cemetery.

Smith Nomination Practically Conceded in Democratic Party

Houston dispatch reports Smith and Robinson are seen as the Democratic ticket to oppose Hoover and Curtis. With the nominating process near, the convention is expected to name candidates quickly after the roll is called. The platform debate looms as the party braces for the national convention and a possible vice presidential spotlight on Senator Robinson of Arkansas.

Cane Creek Road to Become State Highway

Cane Creek Road from Rutherfordton to Morganton will be taken over by the State Highway Commission on August 1. It will be widened topsoiled and improved to form a state highway, per county commissioner G. E. Morgan after a conference with Chairman Frank Page. The route branches off Route 19 at Ruth and passes Westminster School, offering a 15 to 20 mile saving for Morganton travelers by avoiding Marion.

Threat letters fear grips Mooresboro citizens

Mooresboro residents were rattled by a dozen or more threat filled letters mailed from Shelby at 8 30 am last Thursday. The missives were sent to prominent citizens including Mayor Martin merchant W B Lovelace former policeman T B Harris and others plus women. Letters warned recipients to mend their ways or leave town and one mentioned an agent of the Pope regarding Al Smith. Investigations expected with postal detectives and no clear suspect identified.

Benefit Rook Party Hosted by Local Music Club

On Tuesday June 76th from four to six o'clock a benefit rook party was given by a committee of music club members. Eight tables were arranged in the lower rooms and porch with flowers, plants, and a lace covered dining table. After the games an ice course and salted nuts were served by the committee, led by Mrs. E. O. Thomas, Mrs. R. Alexander, and Mrs. R. R. Howes, with Miss Lilah Padgett assisting.

Five Kiwanis Clubs to Meet at Lake Lure

On the Fourth of July the Forest City Kiwanis club will sponsor a five club joint meeting at Lake Lure. Rutherfordton Tryon Shelby Gastonia and Forest City clubs vote unanimously for 100 percent attendance. Each Kiwanian will bring family and a basket for his party. District Governor Clarence Pugh and Lieut. Governor G. Lyle Jones will hire luncheon speakers. Boxing music and song will intersperse with stunts for a old time celebration. Visitors will be guided from Rutherford county roads to the campus near the bottomless pools for the luncheon spread.

Baptist Revival Opens July 22 Forest City Meeting

Plans are under way for the Scarborough Revival in Forest City from July 22 to August 5. The open air tabernacle on First Baptist church grounds will seat over three thousand with a speaker and choir stands. Dr Zeno Wall preaches July 22 26, followed by Dr R L Scarborough of Fort Worth Texas for ten days. Music directed by Prof I E Reynolds, promises to be the county’s largest evangelistic campaign with noted speakers.

Auto Races and Beauty Contests Set for Shelby Fourth

Shelby plans July fourth events at the Cleveland County fairgrounds with auto races and beauty contests. A big negro ball game between Charlotte and Shelby is slated for 10:30 a.m. The auto races begin at 2 p.m.

Elijah A Martin former Rutherford sheriff dies at 73

Ellenboro June 25 The county mourns ex sheriff Elijah A Martin who died at his home after sudden illness Thursday night He served Rutherford County as sheriff from 1900 to 1908 and later oversaw farms in Colfax Township He is survived by his wife Lula Walker Martin a niece Jessie Martin two brothers J S Martin A H Martin and a sister Alpha Martin plus several nephews and nieces Funeral services were held at his home and interment followed at Hopewell church cemetery

Saturday night June 23 forest city crowd enjoyed Dunns Asheville orchestra. The opening event praised for fine music and dances planned for the season every Tuesday Thursday and Saturday night.
