Summer milk slump blamed on feed, not flies or heat
Dr. W. B. Nevens of the University of Illinois dairy department says the mid summer drop in milk yield stems from insufficient feed and especially inadequate protein. He notes grass is high in spring protein but declines as it ripens, urging grain supplements such as ground corn oats linseed meal and wheat bran to maintain milk flow and herd condition through pasture season.
