Local groups meet, Boy Scouts re-register, and the Cliffside Hotel opens under new management as boxing entertainments draw crowds. residents welcome students home and note several family visits and weekend gatherings in Spindale and surrounding areas.
Special to The Courier from Henrietta June 12 reports the Woman's Missionary Society meeting at Mrs Alfred Harrill's home on June 4 with Miss Bessie Harrill assisting and serving nut ice cream and cake. Other notes mention funerals, deaths, revival services, and visits among local families and churches.
A birthday dinner honored Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Wall near High Shoals church with Mr. Wall approaching ninety and Mrs. Wall past eighty six. Cliffside's baseball team reversed form to win its first game with a new lineup led by pitcher Martin. A Masonic lodge consolidation unites Henrietta No. 460 with Cliffside No. 572 to form Lodge No. 460. Attendees included J. C. Hames and Miss Willie Carpenter at Mettie Parker and Roland Hamrick’s wedding in Boiling Springs. Myles Haynes and H L Robertson visited Lake Lure while J C Hayes, Boyce Bridges and J J Frye attend the State Democratic Convention in Raleigh.
Rev. Caleb Hoyle of Shelby preached a soul stirring sermon at Pleasant Grove Sunday morning at 11 00. In Durham attending Duke University pastors school was Rev. J B Tabor Jr. Locals and visitors shared family news and recent travels including trips to Lake Lure and Winston Salem with multiple family greetings and a picnic by Epworth Junior Society at Plat Rock.
In Forest City district on June 11 a B Y P U group was organized at Floyds Creek church and plans to meet every Sunday night. Numerous local residents attended visits and family gatherings over the weekend including Eloise Sorgee with Ethel White and the Wall family birthday dinner near High Shoals.
Mrs Laura E Lovelace widow of Monroe Lovelace died Sunday night June 3 at her daughter Mrs Roscoe C Flack's home in Union Mills after a prolonged illness. Funeral and interment were Tuesday at Mt Creek Baptist Church with Rev M L Buchanan and Rev D J Hunt. Survived by three daughters Mesdames Solon Taylor John Taylor both near Rutherfordton and R C Flack Union Mills. She had been a widow for over 30 years.
