Forest City Kiwanis Radio Program on WWNC

Forest City Kiwanis club airs a one hour WWNC program Wednesday night December 16 at 9 30 featuring local talent. A High School glee club sextet with Misses Brackett Ware Eleanor Meares Ruth Gillespie Reba M theny and Virginia Magness plus Mrs Eddington at piano perform. Other performers include A M Hugh ey Henry Giles Howard Magness and Nell Padgett Norris. Lieut Gov Gillespie gives a five minute talk on Forest City as a residence and business location.

Avonmore Woman Dies Suddenly in Avondale

Avondale, Dec. 26. Mrs. W. Oscar Beachboard, 54, died suddenly at her home Monday morning. She had been in apparently good health and the death shocked those who knew her. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Caroleen Methodist Church with Rev. F. H. Price in charge. Interment followed at Providence cemetery. She is survived by her husband four children and one sister. Funeral arrangements were by Cliffside Mills Furniture Store.

Christmas Services at Methodist Church Observed

Christmas was observed at the local Methodist church with a White Christmas noted by the Sunday School. The morning service featured special Christmas music and a pastor’s message. Evening services included a junior choir chorus, anthem, quartet, solo, duet and sextet with the pastor delivering an appropriate message.

Ellenboro December 24 Ellenboro troop of Boy Scouts was officially reorganized last Tuesday evening at Ellenboro by Professor Rex Long longtime scout master who met with a large number of boys and men of the local Scout committee Several committee members spoke pledging aid to make the Ellenboro troop one of the best and most active in the county December 31 is set for the first meeting of the troop He desires all old and new scouts present for this meeting on Monday evening

Price Named Publicity Head for Kiwanis District

Rutherfordton December 24 R E Price editor of The Rutherford County News has been appointed chairman of the publicity committee of the Carolinas Kiwanis district by President-elect T W Crews of Spartanburg South Carolina Price, the first president of the Rutherfordton Kiwanis club, will boost district efforts and attend the trustees meeting in Charlotte January 17 to outline plans for the year.

New School Books Cost Less in Five Year Adoption

Raleigh December 24 The text book commission announced five year adoption of major and minor subjects with a paradoxical price drop. Newson Readers cost $1.71 for primary four volumes, Johnson Publishing $1.88. Merrill study readers $2.77. Houghton Mifflin $2.81. Laidlaw McCalls speller 61 cents. No elementary science text adopted, reducing seventh grade costs by about one dollar.

R Clyde Wright Hit by Car in Ellenboro Saturday Night

Ellenboro December 26 Clyde Wright of this place was bruised and suffered minor injuries Saturday night when struck by a car driven by his nephew Frank Wright in front of Wilson's Store. He was knocked about twenty feet and taken to Forest City for treatment. The accident was described as unavoidable.

Amanda Whitesides Dead in Rutherfordton Area

Mrs Amanda Whitesides of Rutherfordton died December 17 after a ten day illness at age 81. Funeral and burial were at Rock Springs Baptist church December 18 with Rev E P White presiding. Survived by son and two daughters including Mrs J C Whiteside of Polk County and Mrs C D Barry of Lake Lure and Mrs John A Frady.

On Ocracoke Island in North Carolina there are no highways or bridges to the mainland so residents with about 30 cars avoid license tags for pleasure riding on the sandy beach.

Child Killed When Hit by Car in North Henrietta

James Ward aged three, son of Mr and Mrs Floyd Ward, died after being struck by a car driven by James Doggett near Wells Brothers in North Henrietta. Funeral services were held at Avondale Baptist Church with Rev A Stoudenmire officiating. interment followed at Sandy Plains cemetery. Doggett was placed under $100 bond pending investigation of the death.

Correction: Broadus Green Is Superintendent Of Lights

The Courier corrects a prior misstatement naming Frank Dorsey as superintendent of sky water and lights. The correct official is Broadus Green who held the position during the city Christmas decorations. Under his supervision the lights were planned and the streets decorated.

Rutherford Ginning Sees Large Cotton Yield Increase

Rutherford County ginning reached 15,047 bales by December 13, up from 12,393 a year earlier, while Polk County reported 2,228 bales versus 2,620 last year. The Rutherford total marks one of the county's largest cotton yields in history.

Christmas Pageant Shines at First Baptist Sunday School

On Tuesday evening at 8 o clock the First Baptist church Sun day School presented The Christmas Candle. Directed by Mrs. W. A. Ayers and Mrs. J. F. Womble the pageant told a beautiful Christmas story. After the performance a Christmas treat was given to Sunday School members.

Hines Clarke Wedding Unites Spindale Couple

Spindale notes a wedding of Miss Edna Clarke and Mr. Ernest Hines held Thursday in Spartanburg. Mrs. Hines is the Clarke's daughter. Mr. Hines hails from Polk County. The couple will reside in Spindale after a well wishers’ ceremony.

Adlaide Peeler Shot In Accidental Rifle Incident

Adlaide Peeler, a young high school student, was accidentally shot in the left arm at his home Friday when a fallen rifle discharged as he tried to stand it on end in a corner. The injuries are painful but not serious. Peeler was named an end on The Charlotte Observer all state football team and captained Forest City High School's football team this season.

Rutherford County Taxables Fall From 1927 to 1928

Rutherfordton December 24 The abstract of listed taxables shows Rutherford County total property at 35 862 876 for 1928 down from 36 802 627 in 1927. Real estate totals reach 25 201 899 with 8 719 town lots. Livestock counts include 731 horses 3 824 mules 2 053 cattle 4 586 milk cows 6 172 hogs 52 sheep and 13 goats.

Extension of Time for Buying License Tags

Chief Chas. R. Price warns no extensions for 1929 license tags. All automobile owners must have tags by January 1, including town and state tags. City tags available at City Hall. all cars must display tags by next Tuesday.

Prominent Young Attorney Named Clerk of Superior Court

N Elton Aydlette, a rising Elizabeth City attorney, was appointed Monday by Judge W L Small as clerk of the Superior Court to fill the unexpired term of Ernest I Sawyer who died last Friday. The term expires in November 1930. Aydlette, 26, son of N T Aydlett, married June to Pantha Houser of Rutherfordton. He earned an L L B at UNC and was admitted to the bar in 1926. Previously he practiced in Hamlet, then joined Judge Small before his elevation to the bench, and has been law partner with Larry E Skinner Jr, the county prosecutor. Mrs Aydlett is the daughter of Rutherfordton police chief R L Houser.

Forest City to Host Gastonia In Top Local Basketball Clash

The Golden Tornado of Forest City High meet Gastonia on Friday night at 7 30 on the local court. Forest City beat Gastonia 28 to 21 earlier this year, and officials describe Gastonia as the strongest opponent Forest City has faced this season. Fans urged to attend for an exciting game.

New Romina Theatre Opens January Third in Forest City

The Courier announces Forest City’s new $100000 Romina theatre will open Thursday January 3 with Ramona as the first film. Avondale Woman Dessie Hawkins Dies at 40

Funeral services for Dessie Hawkins were held at Avondale Baptist Church with Rev. Jenkins officiating. Interment followed in Cool Springs cemetery, Forest City. She died Monday at 6 am from heart trouble after months of ill health, living with her brother in Cliffside. Survived by her mother five brothers L Hawkins D Hawkins Elam Joe Hawkins and one sister.

Sunday School Santa Party at First Baptist

The Blue Bird class of the Sunday school at First Baptist met Saturday at 4 PM at Miss Mattie Mills home. A short program preceded a Santa visit who gave gifts to each girl. Rutherford doctor elected to Southern Surgical Association

Dr. Crawford Ho R. H. Crawford of Rutherford Hospital staff was elected to membership in the Southern Surgical Association at its annual convention at White Sulphur Springs West Virginia. The association will meet in Savannah Georgia in 1929.
