New Year Calls From Old New York to 1919 Observances

This piece traces New Year s customs from Peter Stuyvesant s gunfire ban in 1647 to the open house receptions of early 1800s New York, the rise of calling etiquette and cards, and the later shift to controlled, saner celebrations by 1914 across major cities. It cites New York Philadelphia and Boston scenes, noting social change and fashion in New Year s festivities.
