Big program at high school this afternoon

Declamation and recitation contests will be held in the high school auditorium Thursday afternoon followed by athletic events on the new field. It is the first inter school field day for Cool Springs grammar schools and will draw 1500 to 2500 spectators. Prizes include sprints relays races and jumps. Ollie Hamilton's Show Delights Large Local Crowd

The Ollie Hamilton Dramatic Stock Co opened a week-long engagement in their Main street tent Monday to a large appreciative audience. It is their first visit to the city and they impressed with clean, high quality performances and good acting. Remaining nights boast strong bills and a Charleston contest, promising a lively weekend.

Installation Service at First Baptist Church

A 7 30 Sunday night service at First Baptist Church featured an organ recital and hymns, a devotional by Mr Mays Flack, offertory duet by Miss Gaines and Mr Whitlock, and the introduction and addresses of new church officers led by Miss Alma Putnam and Miss Jennie Morris, with solos by Miss Ruth Meares and Miss Viola Randall. The service closed with Hymn No 127.

Scouts of America establish Polk County unit at Tryon meeting

On a Tryon chamber of commerce gathering night last week Messrs. Smyre Schiele and Gillespie joined Polk County to Piedmont Council, Boy Scouts of America. A large turnout formed a committee to recruit leaders for troops and $1,000 was raised for Tryon and Polk County’s quota. Donations ranged from $260 to $25 as locals pledged support. W D Harmon of Atlanta, slated as assistant to Executive Schiele, announced headquarters would open in Forest City once Rutherford’s quota is secured.

Miss Olive Mauney of Charlotte wed Marvin Dorsey once of Forest City now in Charlotte. The ceremony was held April 3 at 10 30 am with Rev A L Stanford officiating. Afterward the couple traveled to Asheville then settled in Charlotte with many friends offering best wishes.

Sinkoe Buys Price & Son Stock of Goods

E I Sinkoe purchases the J M Price and Son stock adding it to the growing Sinkoe inventory. The Price brothers have run their business six years and built a strong local trade. They introduced a steam presser in the county and will focus on pressing and dyeing after selling their stock. A note mentions hydraulic rams with C M Watson of Bostic asking about service.

Rutherfordton Team Wins Triangular Debate to Face Finals

Rutherfordton Central high school defeated Forest City and Cliffside high schools in a triangular debate and advances to the April 15 finals in Chapel Hill. Miss Lucile Callahan and Horace Elliott argued the affirmative against Irma Bridges and Craig Watkins. William Jones and Roger Edwards defeated Charles Dalton and Reidy Aarrill.

Successful Easter Cantata Enlivens First Baptist Congregation

A large audience at First Baptist heard the First Easter cantata with Miss Goggans as organist and director. Soloists Gaines Wilder Meares Mrs H Padgett and Mr Walker from Alexander Schools Union Mills. Abe Glickman violin obligato enhanced the performance. Mrs Glickman sang He is Risen and a Helton quartet closed. Five new members joined the church.

Clean-Up Week April 12 to 17 Proclaims Town Order

The week of April 12th is set aside for town clean up with residents urged to place rubbish in barrels or boxes for the city truck to collect. Vacant lots should have old lumber and trash removed and hogs removed from town premises by April 1. The police chief will inspect and violators will be brought before the Recorder's Court.

Piedmont Exposition Opens In Spartanburg Show Largest Yet

Spartanburg hosts the third Piedmont Exposition with a record crowd of exhibitors. The event runs Friday through Sunday with an elaborate three night fashion style show illuminated by special floodlights. Farmers attend as exhibitors and buyers anticipate a grand display surpassing previous years.

Revival Meetings Set At Wesleyan Methodist Church

A series of revival meetings begins at the Wesleyan Methodist church on Mill Street Wednesday evening April 21 with Rev. John M. Hames of Greer South Carolina as the evangelist. Rev Mr Hames is a nationally known preacher. Mr and Mrs J E Comer of Gastonia will lead the music. The Comers are familiar revival workers in Forest City. Community Christian cooperation is urged.
