An American psychologist, Mr. Jacob Herbert, questions whether dogs think or merely follow training. He owns Furlow, a German police dog hailed as the most intelligent in service, while acknowledging dog owners may claim dogs have a near human sense.
Mr Herbert and his dog Fellow display a wide range of tricks and intelligence. The animal obeys commands, looks from windows, sits, turns, and guards a prisoner. Fellow fetches objects and shows childlike moods when scolded. He even dreams and growls in sleep, prompting speculation he thinks. Mary Jane is noted as the dog's mother.
Forbes carnival week runs September 3 to 7 featuring shows races and trots with crowd appeal and events scheduled at the fairgrounds.
The piece extols Australia as a wool and land powerhouse, noting NSW and Queensland land openings, shifting sheep breeds, and rising mutton and wool demand. It highlights stud stations from Boanoke to Yardry, the impact of closer settlement, and selectors drawing blocks with potential for 6000 sheep. Merinos emerge as the preferred breed for long wool markets.
Weather has hindered earlier plans but recent rain boosts hopes for a successful Forbes Show. Local officials expect entries to flood in by month’s end as preparations begin in earnest. Audiences hear of top stud farms near Warren Nyngan and Forbes districts, with prospects for country merino and long wool markets and land development ahead.
