The Poth Public Schools began Thursday September 1 with about 725 students, expecting rise by week’s end. Superintendent Jerome J. Rohan announced a full faculty, one vacancy in the Title I program, and listed the staff for high school and junior high.
The Wilson County Association for Retarded Children held its September 2 1966 meeting at the Floresville Nursing Home. Dr James MacKay of San Antonio spoke replacing Dr Rast about testing methods for mental retardation including the Wexlar Test which assesses 19 thinking patterns relevant to daily life. The group announced an October 3 1966 meeting at 730 pm at the Floresville Nursing Home with plans for another speaker and invites attendees to bring friends.
Charles Thomas Koch, Floresville native and UT civil engineer, serves as Engineer Assistant with the San Antonio River Authority's Water Quality and Supply Division. He joined in 1966 after graduate studies, aided by prior work with the Texas Highway Dept and a hydrology data project in Austin. Koch helps oversee the Salatrillo sewage treatment plant in Bexar County and pursues professional engineer certification.
The Stockdale Brahmas meet Falls City this Friday night at 7:30 in Stockdale opening their season. They travel to Shiner on Sept. 18 then host La Vernia at Stock on Sept. 23. Meanwhile Postmaster Russell W. Smith says Rural Mail Carriers will distribute 1966 Acreage Survey Cards starting Sept. 14 to collect farmers reports for official Texas crop acreage estimates. Carriers on the project include Joel B. Youngblood Route Two H P Tipton Route Three and C E Yeager Route Four.
The Floresville Tigers will host the Pleasanton Eagles at Eschenburg Field on Friday night September 9 in the season opener. The game is not district but the teams have met in nonleague play, with strong fan support urged for the home squad. New residents include Miss Pauline Beutnagel Vincent Opiela August Sekula and Ed Haddox.
Sacred Heart School of Floresville hosts its annual barbecue on Sunday September 11 on church grounds. Grounds open at 2:00 pm with games amusements and refreshments. Family style supper begins at 4:00 pm featuring barbecue and trimmings. Parishioners and pastors Monsignor John J Gerbermann and Father Carlos Juenke invite all to attend for fellowship.
The Poth Pirates open the 1966 season hosting the Pearsail Mavericks at Pirate Field in Poth on Friday night September 9. District 27AA includes Floresville. Last year’s strong teams suggest thrilling games. fans urged to attend at 7 30 p.m.
The Bluebonnet League prepares for playoffs starting Sunday September 11 after a three way tie for first place among Saspamco Red Sox Saspamco Pipers and Rosciuso. Floresville Eagles visit Saspamco Red Sox at 2 30 p m. The top four teams qualify for the postseason with the championship to be decided at a later date.
Heavy rainfall and an electrical storm swept over Floresville and surrounding areas for more than an hour on Tuesday evening starting around 6 p.m. Rain varied from 1/4 to 2 inches during a two hour period. Wires burned and light rain resumed as forecasts indicated more wet weather later.
Funeral services for Louis J. Moczygemba, 41, of 726 East Carolina Street, San Antonio, Texas, were held Wednesday morning, August 31, 1966, at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with a Requiem Mass offered by Rev. Balthasar Janacek. Rosary was recited on Tuesday.
James Melvin Edmonds son of Mr and Mrs James E Edmonds Rt 2 Box 248 E Floresville Tex enlisted in the United States electronics field He left for Camp Polk Sept 1 to take his basic training He attended Floresville High School and was active in Boy Scout Troop 114 Floresville 4H Club and Floresville FFA Chapter His parents and siblings Douglas and Mary Jane accompanied him to San Antonio International Airport for departure.
Robert Moy reported on Labor Day that he killed 37 rattlesnakes on his property seven miles from town. The two largest rattlers had 13 and 14 rattles, the smaller ones one each. He was repairing the fence when a large hole revealed snakes emerging as he probed the hole with a post.
The Floresville Chamber of Commerce and the Floresville Chronicle-Journal sent peanut bags to the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology meeting in Houston. The bags invite the public to attend the October festival on October 21-22 this year, acknowledged by Roxie L. Capshaw, president of the council.
August weather records show multiple rainfall readings with totals and dates, including 1.02 inches on the hottest day August 1 and several smaller amounts on other dates. The official observer noted rainfall patterns, while a wedding in September drew attendees Mr and Mrs C B D Compton and Mrs B L Newman for Cara Ann Pollard’s marriage in Texas.
Volunteers urgently needed to assist Pam Jarzombek six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Alfred Jarzombek of Poth. She has received patterned therapy for three months with five volunteers at each session and four sessions daily of about ten minutes. Call Mrs Alvin Sunday at 484-3749 or visit the Jarzombek home to help. Anyone can learn to pattern.
The 1965 Social Security Amendments redefine disability to require only illness or injury expected to last 12 months or longer, with benefits limited to those unable to perform substantial gainful work. Eligibility still requires five years of covered work within the prior ten years and a six month waiting period before benefits begin. Local briefing on September 12 at the Commissioners' Courtroom in Floresville. Miss Virginia Sue Barnes, recent Texas Woman’s University graduate, visits her grandmother Mrs Inez Bremer, living with her sister Mrs Ethel Foster.
