Rail road Commission Chair man Jim Nugent said Texas operators reported 103 gas and 48 oil discoveries in October 1981. The year earlier month showed 99 gas and 58 oil discoveries. Gas findings spread across Deep South Texas Refugio Southeast Texas San Antonio West Central Lubbock Midland San Angelo Panhandle East Central and East Texas. Oil discoveries appeared in Deep South Texas West Central North and Southeast Texas plus San Angelo Midland East Central and East Texas and the Sante Lubbock Pan areas. Forty seven hundred twenty seven exploratory and field tests ended as dry holes. Oil and gas permit applications totaled 3146 in October 1981 versus 1980. Drilling applications and service wells rose to 3442 from 3216. Amended drilling requests reached 869 compared with 655 a year earlier.
Wilson County farmer Marvin J. Meyer of McCoy earned a Yieldmasters Club membership after harvesting a grain sorghum yield of 5,492 pounds per acre. Meyer planted DeKalb DK-59 on March 3 and used 7 pounds per acre of fertilizer in a peas growing field in 1980. He fertilized with phosphate and potash and used Milocep for weed control.

Wilson County project added to the 1981 1982 Texas Farm to Market program to replace an unpaved Sulphur Springs Road segment with a paved link to FM 775. The project runs 2.2 miles from FM 775 southwest of La Vernia toward the northwest. The statewide plan allocates 46.8 million for 260 miles of Farm and Ranch to Market roads, including 133 miles new construction and 113 miles additional financing across 28 counties. The Texas Farm and Ranch to Market system, with some 41,000 miles, is a cooperative effort of counties and the state, paving rural access and boosting social and agricultural opportunities.
