Floresville School Band directed by Frits Teltschik gave its final concert of the year at the high school gym on May 20. A appreciative crowd enjoyed a varied program highlighting the band’s training, dedicated to Mr. R. L. Eschenburg, longtime Floresville supporter. The program featured Fritz Teltschik, Cartér, and R. Wootton selections.
The Floresville Methodist program features Ernest Weber, Daniel Rodriguez, Ralph Boening, and the Floresville Concert Band. Sousa and Suppe works, trombone novelty, saxophone solos, and band numbers accompany the Majorettes Judy Carson and others in a Texas Flowers themed event with March pieces and a wedding of the wind finale.
The Floresville High School 54 seniors heard a challenging baccalaureate sermon by Minister A. H. Maner of Grove Avenue Church of Christ San Antonio. Invocation by H. B. Nunn benediction by Rev. John J. Gerber. choir from several churches sang. Faculty and graduates in gray and maroon caps and gowns sat in a spring flower lit stage setting as well wishers patted them on exiting.
Tonight Friday May 27 1955 commencement program begins at 8:00 PM in the high school gym. Processional invocation by Mrs E F Woolsey Jr and Rev C L Mollenkopf. valedictorian and salutatorian addresses by Jo Ann Walston and others. Saxophone choir performance followed by benediction and recessional. Audience asked to remain seated until after the recessional.
At Kosciusko meeting local officials and residents backed a countywide hospital plan. Proponents highlighted improved access and coordination across clinics, while opponents urged funding safeguards and patient protections. The discussion set the stage for ongoing public review and potential votes.
Fifty Floresville Ladies plan door to door visits next Thursday June 2 at 7 p.m. to raise 3000 dollars for a new bookmobile. The drive, backed by county officials, targets trips to schools and town centers, promising 1200 volumes and in-library checkout, plus a monthly branch route to Poth Stockdale La Vernia Kosciusko. Public donations from families, large and small, are urged to meet the goal and expand countywide library service.
All-Star baseball game to be played at the new Poth diamond Sunday afternoon May 29 at 3 o clock. Teams from six Bluebonnet League towns will compete to raise funds for league and team expenses. Fans urged to attend and boost league support.
County Agent Gene Spaniel announces a very important Watermelon meeting at the Community Hall in Stockdale. All watermelon growers of Wilson and adjoining counties are invited to attend this Tuesday night at 8. Two speakers, George Aminsion and George R. Williams, will discuss vital topics for growers. Stockdale, known as The Watermelon Center of Southwest Texas, has faced drought and cold but recent rains improved the crop. a good harvest is possible with continued favorable weather.
The South Texas All-Star Baseball Team led by Arthur Pinkey Whitney will hold open try-out camps across several towns culminating in a July 26 game versus Art Weltman’s San Antonio Amateur All-Stars at Mission Stadium. Amateurs under 19 may participate. a Major League scouts panel will select two to play in the Hearst National game at the Polo Grounds.
The first summer gathering of Teen Haven will be held Thursday June 2 at 7 30 p m in the high school gymnasium with games such as dominges checkers cards and Chinese checkers and records for dancing. Teen Haven directors Gene Koch Bobby Richardson Gladys Flitter Martha Jane Eschenburs and Barbara Williams lead the event with Dianne Frick and Ann Lewis assisting. Cold drinks and sandwiches will be sold and membership cards issued at the door for those joining. All members are urged to attend and guests are welcome.
Mr and Mrs Roy Holstein announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Betty Jean to William H Haese son of Mr and Mrs H H Haese. The ceremony is set for June 1 at the First Baptist Church in Floresville.
Seven migrant cotton workers from Floresville, all members of the Gonzales family, were killed when their truck collided with Southern Pacific’s Sunbeam en route to Cotton Field work. The No. 18 streamliner traveling at about 70 mph struck the truck at 9:17 am near Hempstead. Nine bodies were reported with one survivor, Justo Gonzales, 35, in Floresville. Survivors include other Gonzales relatives. Funeral and visitation details followed in Floresville and Wilson County communities.
J E Cloninger of SWPGA warned Wilson County peanut growers of a serious seed shortage and spoke on peanut program at a meeting in the Wilson County courthouse last Saturday night May 21. A.D. Richardson presided. guest J E Brite of Pleasanton led remarks on the peanut outlook. Cloninger stressed seed supply urgency and urged farmers to buy seed now amid statewide and southern shortages.
Insects affecting Texas crops were noted as corn earworm pests harming cotton and other staples. Researchers warn growers to expect continued feeding and potential yield losses this season. Local extension agents urge monitoring and integrated pest management.
