Agricultural column discusses 2,4-D herbicide types Amine Salt and Ester, urging safety and crop protection. Advises choosing 4 pounds per gallon strength, using fine control to avoid drift, spraying with ample water, and avoiding windy conditions. urges consultation with county agent.
The Floresville Chamber of Commerce elected I D Flores Jr as president of the 1959 Floresville Peanut Festival. He is linked to ED Flores Sr and Flores Drug Company, a Floresville High School and UT graduate, Lions Club member, city councilor, and Chamber of Commerce director. The festival is set for October 9-10.
Floresville and Poth high schools will award American Legion School Awards. Norma Trevisio of Floresville and Harvey Warnken of Poth are the recipients chosen by their faculties for graduation. The awards honor high character, scholarship, and service in support of government and society.
The fifty sixth annual SWTSTC commencement lists 188 graduates including Floresville students Franklin Dexter Hoover and James E Seay. Sen Lyndon B Johnson will deliver the commencement address, with Dr William Kraushaar giving the baccalaureate sermon. A reception for graduates and families is planned at Dr J G Flowers home.
The Bluebonnet League this Sunday May 24 will host an all star contest at the Floresville Eagles diamond starting at 2 45 PM. The Pleasanton Braves face All Stars chosen from the other six teams in the league with no other Bluebonnet action scheduled.
The 1959 dedication of Blessed Sacrament Church at Poth will occur next Sunday May 24 with Most Rev Stephen A Leven officiating. About 300 attendees from Southwest Texas are expected for the 9:30 a.m. ceremony followed by a Solemn High Mass and a large barbecue dinner at Hermann Sons Hall. The new steel and brick church seats about 300 and is built by Cox Construction Company with DiStefano Cerna as architects.
A Floresville baccalaureate service is held Sunday May 24 1959 at 8:00 PM in the High School Gym. The event includes processional invocation scripture sermon benediction and recessional with many graduates listed by name and church affiliations.

Marilyn Carpenter, 19, a San Antonio sophomore, was named the San Antonio regional winner in the Texas Hetty Princess Contest at Burbank High School. She advances to the state contest in June with a possible shot at the national Dairy Princess title. Runners up included Rose Marie Bartel of Comfort and Charmaine Reininger-Converse of Converse, with Ann Trowis crowning.
Scattered but damaging rainfall last Saturday night ranged up to four inches in parts of Wilgon County. Floresville and Labatt Calaveras areas reported the heaviest impacts with wind toppled trees and destroyed crops. A midweek electrical storm added .56 inch to Floresville. electric service was out about an hour.
Jack Orts selected as Star District Farmer in the Alamo District FFA. He is in his third year of Vocational Agriculture and is the son of Mr and Mrs Robert Orts of Floresville.
In 1958 over 49 percent of traffic injuries stemmed from weekend accidents, highlighting the higher risk period.
Floresville Chamber of Commerce touts a record turnout for the May Trades Day held last Saturday. Merchants report strong sales and growing interest as crowds lined the streets for the 5 PM prize drawings and the school essay prize on at home trade. Officials plan a larger event for June with further announcements to come.
William Murphy of Stockdale Texas died Monday in Stockdale. He was a member of San Antonio Lodge No. 1079 AF and AM and the Scottish Rite. Survivors include wife Jennie F. Murphy. sons W A Murphy and Alex Murphy. daughter Dorothy Gentz. seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Service Tuesday at 1:30 PM at Porter Loring Chapel with Dr John Dodge officiating. Interment Mission Burial Park under San Antonio Lodge 1079 AAOS. Arrangements with Porter Loring.
