County Agent E D Beck reports Wilson county farmers embrace trench silos to save corn from drought. They cut ensilage or pack whole bundles with water sprayed during packing to improve feed quality. Some graze standing corn. others stack close ricks as emergency silos. Immature corn needs extra water.
Mayor S. V. Houston, confined at home due to illness, is improving daily and now able to be up and about. He recently rode with Mrs. Houston and their son to San Antonio to consult a specialist who treated him at the onset. Friends express relief and wish for a swift return to active duties.
A passerby shares a street conversation about magazine subscriptions and door to door sales. The man explains moving bundles of magazines and claims to target housewives, then shifts to advising selling to business men and avoiding strangers. The dialogue hints at hustle, consumer targets, and street wisdom.
The Fairview rural high school held closing exercises on Monday evening May 8 in the school auditorium. Supt T R Mobley presided and Atty W H Blanton delivered an address. County Superintendent J E Swift presented the diplomas. Valedictorian Gwendolyn Butler and salutatorian Roberta Riley led a list of graduates including Virginia Harllee Virgel Beam Shelby Howard Milton Cox and Travis Hayden. The class play A Prairie Rose was performed to a large audience. A fuller graduation report will appear next Friday.
Miguel Silva a 27 year old Mexican farmer died from injuries after a Saturday night car crash near E and 4th streets. His brothers Francisco and Santos escaped with minor injuries while Bob Powell Jr. avoided injury. Silva died the next day and was buried Monday in a large funeral.
W. H. Sellers aged 86 died at his daughter's home near here on Sunday May 14. The funeral was held at Marcelona cemetery Monday. His wife passed away about three years ago. Sellers was regarded as a good man in the community.
First public appearance of pupils taught by gifted instructor. Unusual talent shown by the young performers during the recital event led by Miss Jewel Franklin.
County Superintendent J E Swift delivered the Pawnee rural high school commencement address. Miss Jewel Franklin taught the class with Baylor College training and public recital debut in Floresville, praised for poise diction and expression.
A well known farmer living southwest of town on the Camp Ranch was bitten by a rattlesnake around noon last Friday while at work in his chicken house. He was rushed to Floresville for medical treatment.
The A I Glee Club visits Floresville homes on a southwest Texas tour. The program is described as highly entertaining.
The Boys' Glee Club of Texas College of Arts and Industries from Kingsville toured Southwest Texas this week. They performed at Floresville high school after visiting Goliad Yorktown Kenedy and Karnes City. The concert drew a packed audience including the entire Floresville student body.
W H Blanton, longtime San Antonio and Southwest Texas attorney, has moved back to Floresville Wilson County after years in Alamo City. He maintains law offices with Attorney O F Burney and and Mr and Mrs Blanton have a cottage at the sessors.
Howard Pooley son of Mr and Mrs I A Pooley of a farm near Floresville was elected principal of Banquette school in Nueces county at a board meeting Wednesday night He will also coach athletics and teach Spanish and history He is a recent Floresville High School graduate who worked his way through Schreiner Institute and South Texas State Teachers College aiming for a BA in June This proves a young man’s drive and ambition leads to success
Miss Agnes George, daughter of Mr and Mrs Charlie George of near Floresville, wrote from Springfield Missouri about visiting the Shepherd of the Hills country. She toured Uncle Matt’s cabin, the post office, and the cemetery with tombstones mentioned, noting the view from a high peak and the book’s tie to Harold Bell Wright. In Stockdale, Texas, Future Farmers of America held the district banquet with 150 to 200 attending, led by Pat Stout, featuring student speakers and reports on farming projects like cattle, hogs, crops, and tree planting.
The editor and family invite attendance at Brownsville High School commencement exercises in Brownsville on Friday evening May 26 at the Junior College High School auditorium. Milton Horace West Jr., son of Congressman Milton West, is the graduate. The note recalls childhood days with his father and extends well wishes for success.
On Mother's Day Sunday May 14 members of Club Mirasol hosted a luncheon at Lodi school for their mothers. The menu included sandwiches potato chips salad iced tea cake and ice cream for all attendees.
J Bert Polley of Florence Arizona formerly of Floresville and Wilson county spent several days last week with Mrs Alma Craig and relatives. Polley now captains the state prison of Arizona and was en route to New York on business. He left Floresville in 1898 and is remembered by older residents as the son of the late Egbert.
