Heavy weekly rainfall revived fields around Gorn reversing drought stress. Farmers report improved soil moisture levels and prospects for harvest as rainfall totals exceed seasonal averages across the district.
H C Wells of the Floresville chamber reports sharp demand for certified Porto Rico sweet potato slips after recent rains. About 1500 to 2000 slips per acre from East Texas seed are being sold as Wilson county diversifies. Wells urges farmers to act quickly to secure remaining stock.
The district court sentenced Tinney to 12 years and Carroll to 8 years for robbery by firearms against J. P. Holcombe on May 1. The jury deliberated about three hours after being sworn in, following a May jailbreak in which four inmates escaped from custody and overpowered Deputy Sheriff D. J. Acosta.
E D Beck and Ed Franklin, pioneer Jersey breeder of Floresville, were invited to Choate Karnes county on Tuesday evening to attend a community meeting at the school house. The program highlighted dairying and diversification with Floresville and Kenedy business men addressing the crowd. The gathering showed strong public interest and a positive, collaborative spirit.
Sixty cars of onions had been shipped from Poth by yesterday afternoon. Rain delayed shipments last week, but with improved weather the rest of the crop will be rushed to market. The yield is excellent and growers are receiving good returns.
Walter J. Chaney 43 of Raymondville died Friday after an overturned vegetable truck crushed his head on a steep Falls City Hobson grade en route to San Antonio. He jumped from the cab as the truck toppled and was taken to Poth, then to San Antonio for burial. Chaney, a single man, had worked in Raymondville two years and was a member of the American Legion.
The City Board of Equalization met at city hall to review tax renditions by tax collector J. H. Mayes. It will reconvene on Tuesday May 28 to hear taxpayer complaints about raised taxes. Members include R. L. Eschenburg C. F. Burney and J. C. Merchant. The 1929 city tax rate stays the same except a 10 cent per $100 rise in the general fund for a new fire pumper and gear.
Stockdale ships the first car of a new diversification crop. The crop yields well and packs excellently, keeping the packing shed busy as shipments increase.
Jacob Zahn, a well known farmer living south of town, went to Crowell in Foard county last week and returned Monday night. He was accompanied by his daughter who had been there with relatives for some time. The venerable lady is 93 years old but stood the trip well and plans to remain here with her son and family.
The Secretary's annual report highlights the year's activities and an excellent financial summary. Five directors were elected by the chamber commerce board, strengthening leadership amid ongoing economic efforts.
Mrs Birdie Easterling of Del Rio and Grand Matron of the Eastern Star of Texas spent Sunday in town with her aunt Mrs W A Scott. The visit included an official tour of chapters along the coast country.
